The Great Ocean Road

... 2nd March with 54 on board but only 2 survived the shipwreck. The flies were still abundant so we drove on south to the Otway Fly, a huge elevated walkway in a forest of gum trees. We spent a very enjoyable hour scampering along all the metal paths high in the tree tops and had a sandwich in the restaurant afterwards. We picked up the Princes Highway via Colac and Geelong back through Melbourne to St Kilda where we strolled along the prom ...

Cheese World

... how choppy the water is. Went on along the coast a bit to a cove which had some humungous waves that nearly soaked us! We then headed away from the coast to Camperdown, stopping at Cheese World on the way (much to Debs delight!), stayed at Camperdown caravan park.

Melbourne to Port Campbell

... WWI. It has been called the largest war memorial in the world. It skirts along the southern coast of Victory taking drivers along winding roads through wooded groves with the clinging koalas and along steep cliffs with breathtaking seascapes. The 300 took us 240 kilometers to waterfalls, lookouts, rainforests in gulleys, beaches, and finally the jewel of the the Great Ocean Road, the 12 Apostles. They are the massive remains of limestone headlands that are constantly being ...

Port Campbell

Moving away from Mount Gambier, the Great Ocean Road starts just before Port Fairy...very quaint fishing town and of course more pie shops (I resisted this time though). They even had camel rides to boot. Arrived in Port Campbell late afternoon and managed to find a pretty good motel before other accomodation chasers arrived. Made use of the free laundry facilities!! Next day, we did some walking on the coast at Loch Ard Gorge and saw numerous eroding sandstone ...

Christmas in Melbourne & Cruising The Gt Ocean Rd

... Movies. (We missed you all!) So with Christmas out of the way, and having the post-christmas sales on, we went out to do a little bit of shopping. A tent and all things camping were on the list. We had to stay in a hostel on the night of the 26th as we couldnt pick up our car until the 27th. This was certainly an experience and not one that we wanted to repeat. We were in a multishare room with 3 other guys, 2 of which went out for the night and ...

A bunch of stuff in a short period of time...

The last dew days have been pretty packed with stuff, as I signed up for a two-day tour of the Great Ocean Road that got back last night. This was my first tour bus experience, and while I felt at times like one of the sheep that we passed by frequently on the road (ride the bus-get off the bus-take picture-get back on the bus...ect.), the trip was great overall. The other travelers were backpackers as well, and I was the only American. Everybody's English ...

Colac

Into the Grampians

... was echoing around the valley and so we decided to drive to the Halls Gap Hotel for dinner where I managed to stock up on veggies due to the self serve style!! The following day we headed west so Emma could finally get to go horse riding, being fairly advanced she was lucky to be the only person that day and got a solo ride with guide which I think made the whole experience even more special. From my limited knowledge of horses and the like the whole set up looked very professional ...

The Twelve Apostles

... may be, I'm skeptical there really are a dozen. Maybe one of the twelve has already succumbed to the ocean. Maybe the dozen was merely a poetic approximation; "The 11 Apostles" lacks something. Accuracy aside, the environment is a real Dolby Surround Sound © movie, an Imax experience without the schmaltzy narrative: waves in perpetuity taking their long, loud runs at the shore; the ochre cliffs in the morning sun have green turf heads like some impossible golf course ...
