Christmas Panamanian style.

I am spending Christmas on Cayo Carenero. Just a two minute boat ride across from Isla Colón and the tourist town of Bocas del Toro. It's a beautiful tiny island and I have splashed out for a couple of nights at comfortable hotel Tierra Verde. I don't know how to best describe Cayo Carenero, other than that it will probably never show up in any package tour catalogs as wheelchair friendly. There's no roads or traffic, except small taxi boats circling the island for passengers heading to Bocas...

Scam to avoid: Jampan Tour

... day. THe program is the same for every operator. What makes the difference is how they deliver.
We came about this one called Jampan Tours and "Chuck" was there giving us his sales pitch.
He assured us that unlike others operators, he would go early so that we would be the first at Dolphin Bay to see the dolphins, that his people, unlike others, would tell us a lot about the places we would go and be real guides ...

Panamanian Paradise

... on a trampoline in the middle of the caribean.
The last boat leaves aqua lounge at 2:30 and they go straight to another bar thats on the main island, this bar also has a hole cut in the deck for a pool but its not as cool without the diving board, at 2:30 in the morning to a bunch of drunk people that doesnt really matter though.

So after having a night out where I spent more time in the water then on land I am a little hung over and thinking its maybe time for a nap in a hammock.

Just another day in Paradise..

... much of Mexico City, but we stayed in a hostel right in the centre so we did get to walk around a few streets and eat real tacos and drink Coronas (and other local beers!).

We arrived in Panama City in the evening, and didnīt have any accom booked so the airport tourist desk orgainsed some for us. We jumped in a taxi which took us to a dodgy-looking hotel in an even dodgier looking part of the city.. yikes. No one spoke english there which made it ...

Sandflies and sickness

We didnīt wait to recover from our trip in the wild Corcovado and went straight to Panama the next day via various modes of transport. Crossing the border without incident we were bundled into a small air conditioned bus and sped off down a 2 lane highway. How long itīs been since we saw one of these. And, we were actually cold on the bus. Headed straight to David, which is an overnight stop. There is nothing here, not even a decent restaurant. We ...

Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica ... Day 5

... 200 steps the average person would take to reach their destination which is their nest below the ground. They take the leaves with them and they live off the fungus the rotting leaves produce. It is amazing to watch the trek from beginning to end, I was going to follow one to see just how long it took to take from beginning to end but never did. We went to the store for water, the cashier (and possible owner) recognizes ...

PANAMA

After taking the nightbus of 8:30 pm in Panama City, I arrived at 7 am in Almirante. From here I took a watertaxi to Bocas Del Toro town. Here is not a lot to see but if you take a collectivo to Boca de Drago you find the most beautiful beaches ever, starfish included. Wauw, these beaches are even more beautiful than those of the Bahamas!

... but nonetheless, it was a bit uncomfortable borrowing money from someone we don't know. Nothing nullifies one uncomfortable situation quicker than another uncomfortable situation. We get into he boat, and Erwin turns the key, intending to spark life into his 4-stroke outboard. Nothing. "Is no problem. Corrosion." Fair enough. Lots of salt water here. 10 minutes later, "we might ...

Visited Wizards Beach

Today we took a boat across to another Island to visit Wizards Beach, we had heard that the path to the beach was muddy but didnīt realise that it was going to be so bad, we ended up walking bare foot through the mud and it really was grim. The beach was lovely and really quiet, its so nice to be back in the Caribbean Sea because the colour of the sea is beautiful. Really didnīt look forward to the muddy walk back though.....

Hangin' With the Beach Bums

... other than to cross over to a bar on another island one night, because I didn't feel the need to wake up at 9:00 a.m. to pay for one of the boats that ferry people around to the different beaches. Plus, I needed some quality time with a good computer to deal with an IRS issue back home. And I was out until after 2:00 a.m. every night, working on the restaurants, nightclubs and tourists part of the Wiki entry. It is touristy, running the ...
