      Off to Manchester after supper to be next to the airport for the early morning flight! Need to check in at 6.40 am (sigh)... But very excited to get on the way! Hoping for an upgrade due to it being my birthday (10th feb), however, will be very surprised if i get one! Fingers crossed. Etihad flight to Bangkok via Abu Dhabi ...

      Today sees us leaving Witton Gilbert with Passports! Vicky took us to Durham Station and then we caught the train and bus to Manchester Airport! The whole journey went very smoothly, with the exception of lugging large cases up and down stairs at York but hey ho! Very early in Airport - 1hr before gate opened. Looking forward to being frisked by Si but he's in Teneriffe! Both well and now waiting for Gate to open and signing off for next ...

      ... lugging the bag back up the stairs. After checking in the girl tells me room is back down stairs. Round 3 of lugging the bag back stairs again. Eventually I found the room and the original smell of rot and ammonia was 10 times stronger. After spending 10 minutes in the room attempting to settle in the smell got the better of me, I couldn't stay any longer! Dragged the bags back upstairs, round 4! ...

      ... were in the Unionist parts of Derry – every single house had a Union Jack and a Northern Ireland flag flying, and the streets were decorated with the same flags plus heaps of bunting because it was very much “Marching Season”.

      We were starting to encounter a bit of rain, so on a wet day, we drove around the Inishowen Peninsula, which is the most northerly part of the Republic. We went all the way up to Malin Head and nearly got blown off ...

      ... some breakfast to take with us for the 3.5 hour journey. The countryside was very green and in parts there were still signs of all the rain they had with so much water lying everywhere. We passed many towns between Edinburgh and Manchester, with the hope we would see some huge castles but then we realised they wouldn't want to have their places near a train line!!
