... was a huge deal later because we found out that Wellington doesn't have free (or unlocked) wireless ANYWHERE. This little piece of information came as quite a surprise for us because we figured that we would be able to find places to connect for free around Wellington just like we do in the states. Not the case. It costs four dollars to go to an internet cafe and use the internet for an hour! Talk about a rip off. We fell asleep angry about the wireless ...
Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand fierce4nz... Dawn to wish her happy birthday but only ended up getting her answer phone so were sat singing happy birthday in the middle of the hotel lobby. After this we set off to our campsite for the night which was about an hour away and when we arrived there was a group of about 10-15 ‘youths’ sat in cars and in a tent but thankfully they were pretty quiet all night and didn’t disrupt us from our good 8 hours sleep.

Wellington, North Island, New Zealand teresachan... hours and ends in Picton. From very beginning it was possible to spot a white peaks of South island mountain ranges. In Picton bay we were welcomed by a flock of dolphins. My first destination were Marlborough Sounds. I drove all the very serpentine way to Kenepuru Heads and then further up, off the beaten trail, on an unsealed road. There was a place with a great view over both sides - Titirangi Bay as well as the ...
Wellington, North Island, New Zealand tsimkoWednesday 8 October Lower Hutt S 41° 14.1' E 174° 54.7' By the side of the road each time you approach a forest, there's a graduated sign indicating "Risk of Fire Today" - it's been solidly in the "Low" section every day so far. The same sign design was used to indicate "Risk of Ice" (I think) at one point I passed. Today, leaving the University town of Palmerston, the identical sign design indicated that "Risk of ...
Lower Hutt, North Island, New Zealand pete-rWell, good thing that I planned a bike trip, seeing as there has been a drought and all going on over many parts of the country, the only way for the rain to be guaranteed is for me to plan a holiday. This reminds me of way back in 95/96 when Alistair and I did a road trip around Southern Africa, and the rain followed us the whole way around the country, and when we got to Zimbabwe, a xx year drought was broken. Maybe I am ...
Lower Hutt, New Zealand piperj... avocado prawns for starter, barbequed Trevally (an NZ fish) on a bed of beans, peppers, chorizo and scallops, marshmallows on the fire for dessert and wine bought on the Hawke's Bay bike tour to wash it all down. Oh so good... Weather held and we didn't have any rain as it was forecasted. We even had a Christmas tree! Our Christmas day walk was not exactly in a winter wonder land but more like a trek in rain forest - it was very very ...
Putangirua Pinnacles, New Zealand johannajulienHaving been denied access to the river pleasures of Wanganui (both fast and sedate), we decided not to let that spoil our appreciation of the city. So we decided to go to the Durie Elevator, which is cut into the side of the hill giving access to the part of the city on top of the hill and with views over the ocean and river. Unfortunately, the signs leading us to this attraction took us to a carpark at the top, and we didn't much feel like paying ...
