... along the way - we noticed the price change from as little as $2.10 per gallon up to $3.50 per gallon BUT half way along the run from Monterey the cost was $6 per gallon!!! Needless to say we only put enough in to get us to where we thought we would get cheaper petrol (as were a bunch of other people I think). Anyway, on to Santa Barbara where we learnt more about the Spanish setting up missions ...

... went upstairs to our seats. It pulled out of the station bang on time and it was great to just sit back and watch out the window. Not too long later we went to the dining car and all had a full American breakfast, and a bit of wifi too. We settled back into our seats and a few more hours went by. ... a defence training base - is sparsely populated and I can't really imagine why anyone would want to live here.
Our morning stop was at the Joshua Tree visitors centre just before we entered the National Park.
Very rugged country in the park - Joshua Trees coming into view. They don't grow arms until after they bloom for the first time.

Fortunately I could make a right out of the Hertz place then after 2 blocks a right onto Santa Monica Boulevard and then a right onto the coastal Highway 1 towards Santa Barbara so my American driving skills did not get tested for an hour or so.
