Historical Traveler Reviews The Old Presbytery Kinsale
Loved it
I almost cancelled the booking I had made at The Old Presbytery from reading some of the reviews, but I'm glad I didn't because we had a lovely room - with four poster bed and jacuzzi - and the family running it are very friendly. Breakfast's were great too. If we go back to Kinsale, we'll stay there again.
Loved Kinsale, Loved the Old Presbytery!
I don't understand the negative reviews -- my wife & I thoroughly enjoyed the Old Presbytery - the best b&b we stayed in over 2 weeks in Ireland & England. The staff accomodated us at the last minute & the price (95 lbs.) was well worth it, nice bright rooms close to everything.
Also, breakfast can't be beat -- try the smoked salmon & scrambled eggs.
Kinsale is a great stop & we wish we had done two days here. Had dinner at the Blue Haven restaurant -- excellent oysters & mussels. Also, be sure to stop into the Tap Tavern and get a pint from Mary -- we did the Ghost Tour (quite campy, but a fun way to spend an hour or so and meet people).
Good for us
I guess from the other reviews that this place can be good or bad...depending on the day. we spent 2 days there. Rooms were great - nice size, well equipped and clean. Kinsale - a very nice place. "you pays your money...you takes your choice"..
Overpriced
Stayed 1 night August 19, 2004 in the Penthouse , 2 rooms connected with a spiral staircase. Rate was 220 euros for the 4 of us. I was obviously willing to pay the price as I had booked it months ago. This was the most expensive accomodation on our trip, but it gave us some space having 2 rooms and it was to have a washer which was much needed 6 days into the trip so I was willing to pay. The room is cute. double bed as you enter, 2 armchairs, with bathroom and kitchenette with microwave and tea and washer/ dryer, which was OUT OF ORDER.Up a spiral staircase is the large, spacious 2nd level wth king bed gorgeous view , great large en-suite with claw tub, robes ample towels and soap etc, sitting area with tv and another area with a chaise. The room was lovely to look at and with alot of room for a family of 4, but again and this has been a recurring problem except in Killarney, the room was Dirty. Balustrade of wooden spindles was sticky and COATED with dust bunnies. Chaise was unfortunately and inappropriately covered in a light fabric and was FILTHY, stains of who knows what on both upsatirs sitting areas , so much so, I put a towel down before I sat down.Spiral staicase was wobbly and railings were loose, stairs themselves were slippery to walk on so we had to tread carefully. Beds were comfortable and we slept well. 2 armchairs in downstairs area were slip covered in an IVORY coloured fabric which was Filthy that my kids did not want to sit on them. Breakfast was wonderful, parking on site and location great. Due to obvious lack of upkeep ,certainly in this particular room and even tho it was cute at first glance I cannot understand how this place is recommended in some guidebooks, certaimly I did not find the attention to detail as one guidebook says. I did get the $$$ rate as is listed in the guidebook ,but it is Not Worth it.
The Old Presbytery was the worst.
We just returned from our two week trip in Ireland. The Old Presbytery was one of the worst places we stayed in. It was not worth the money they charge for the room. Our room which had not been cleaned very well had filthy carpets and peeling wallpaper. The hallway carpets are also very dirty. You do not get your moneys worth at this B&B.
Charming and well run
A wonderful place to stay, charming and cozy. We stayed in the 2 room suite and it was so well appointed and so tastefully decorated we did not want to leave. A spiral staircase connects the rooms, each with its own well appointed bathroom, one with a genuine cast iron tub other with a shower. Location is perfect. Parking is inside the grounds and convenient. The Irish Breakfast is a treat, served in a cozy antique room, the food quality is as good as the service, FIRST RATE.
We hope to be lucky enough to stay there again!!!
Wonderful at a great price
While in Ireland, my husband and I wanted to stay at well priced, but very lovely, places with character in towns that would give you the flavor of Ireland. We were not disappointed with this lovely B&B, located right in town. We stayed in one of the lovely rooms with a balcony overlooking town (which hadn't been promised, but they'd remembered that we'd wanted it and gave it to us when we showed up -- a lovely surprise). It's price was also about half that of some of the other tonier places in town, but it was just as lovely and convenient. In Kinsale, we'd definitely stay here again.
Very nice
Ireland is expensive and considering the many places that we stayed this was a bargain and extremely pleasant experience. The rooms are very nice and CLEAN! It is on a quiet street, but within walking distance of everything you would want to do and see in Kinsale. The breakfast was delicious and imaginative. We were not placed in the room we originally requested, but we did have a jacuzzi tub which was great.
The room had a leak and was a little musty, but we survived.
Charming place
I read a report from another tripadvisor user from Paxton and was appaled. This person obviously has no taste. We also stayed at The Old Presbytery and thought it was wonderful. The room and the house itself were just charming. We found the bed very comfortable and the owners so friendly and helpful from recommending restaurants to giving directions. "Descent" is certainly not the correct word for describing the breakfasts. We traveled all around Ireland and they were the best breakfasts we got anywhere. They wre just delicious. Also the cleanliness was 10 out of 10. Everywhere was sparkling. We will definately return there on our next holiday to Ireland.
Never Again
Was very disappointed in the Old Presbytery and would never stay there again. We reserved a third-floor deluxe room there, and granted, it was large by most B&B standards and had a small terrace and sitting room. However, there were no extra pillows and the bed was hard and lumpy -- to the point that I had to take massive doses of ibuprofen the next morning -- and attention to quality was lacking overall. On the terrace, an arm had fallen off a chair and was just lying there on the ground. No one had bothered to pick it up and reattach it. Below the terrace, rubbish strewed the grounds. I had looked forward to making tea with the in-room hot water pot only to find on opening it that it contained water and some type of organic growth that had apparently been there for days. My husband had to shower with cold water because there was absolutely no hot water to be had at 8:00 that morning. I would not rate the place as terrible because it did have some saving graces, such as a decent breakfast and a spacious room, but it definitely wasn't worth the 140 euros.

Ireland Day 13
Ireland Day 13 Well that was an interesting night sleeping in the castle. The beds were very noisy, so every time one of the 20 blokes rolled over their bed squeaked so i woke up! Argh! Anyway, 6am came and the sun was shining in my eyes telling me that it was time to get up, somehow i fought the urge to get up and fell asleep again until about 7. …
The Boatmen of Kinsale
Hello, everyone. Greetings from Ireland! It is my turn to write about our fabulous trip so please bear with me if I start to ramble. I can't even begin to describe the beauty of this country. There is every shade of green imaginable, history on every corner of every street and in every facet of their everyday life. When I say history, I mean way …
