Before setting out on the three-hour trip to Rotorua, we had the Langham's awesome breakfast buffet (the best part was the made-to-order crepes). I drove, and again the windshield wipers were in heavy use despite the sunny weather. Other than that, driving on the left was not such a big deal.

The guides/brutal men, played some games with us, one being that the men had to carry the women thru the deep water without dropping us - my guy dropped me straight away, Julia had 2 men carrying her and made it to the other side! they gave us hotchocolate and flapjack and orange juice! we carried on the SH5 down into Waimangu valley where the scenery became very volcanic, loads of small flat topped grassy hillocks with grazing cattle the road twisted and turned until reaching the waimangu village where we had lunch...

continuing through rainbow valley we found an awesome walk up the mountain to the side of one of the volcanoes it was very interesting with black ...

... don’t need soap or shampoo. Here the kids used to dunk their biscuits and place kettles in the water to heat up. Apparently the sulphur here eats up electrical wiring – so they all rent their appliances from a company. When they pack up, they simply ring up the company and get a replacement! We passed the Gurgling Throat – the most violent spring here in the village, which throws up super-hot water to the surface. Loads of steam, and apparently you can stand here ...
