Historical Traveler Reviews Great Ponsonby Arthotel Auckland
Most Interesting Area in Auckland
The Great Ponsonby is a jewel in the midst of the most diverse and interesting areas of Auckland. Lots of shops and restaurants. I am sure you can stay somewhere cheaper but the staff at TGPB&B will really take care of everything. Phillip's breakfasts are enough to last you most of the day...don't miss them.
Great experience
The Ponsonby is a very lovely and comfortable B&B (though I also might not use the word "boutique" to describe it). Our room (the penthouse) was great and very comfortable (felt like home). The breakfasts, location, and (most of all) hosts are all fantastic. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and we would highly recommend it. That being said, we thought Auckland had much less to offer than the rest of NZ, and recommend spending little (to no) time there.
Homely but not boutique
There are lots of great things about the great ponsonby - great location, great hosts, great breakfasts. but overall we felt this was a homely B&B marketed as a boutique experience. Certainly compared to other hosted accomm we stayed in in NZ it was a little overpriced and the room/bathroom we stayed in was basic in terms of decoration and facilities. throughout our travels in NZ we felt the term 'boutique' was very overused and accomm is not of the standard you would find in Europe or the USA for boutique accomm. The great ponsonby is fine if you know what you're getting, but don't expect too much more.
Comfortable, Quiet, Fresh air
Loved the Great Ponsonby! Stayed over New Years holiday 04-05 and enjoyed one of the garden studios in back with my teenage son. We both enjoyed the relaxed feel of the common areas as well as our room. Both hosts were relaxed and humorous and made us feel welcome to the area. What a great change from all the tired "corporate" hotels we frequented. We checked out of the Sebel Suites Hotel because of the noise from the band that went very late at night one floor down.
We both enjoyed having free wireless internet access for email and general information for our travels. The bicycles were also great for getting around and seeing Auckland from a perspective you can't get with a car.
Attended the Samoan Methodist Church that is just around the cornor on Sunday morning. Fantastic energetic worship service and easily followed even the majority of the service was given in Samoan. What a great way to sample the culture of the community. Ponsonby seems to be a "locals" area rather than a tourist section of town - which we loved.
I highly recommed the Great Ponsonby!
Best B & B in Auckland!
The Great Ponsonby should be everyone's B & B of choice when visiting Auckland. It's in a great location and the rooms are spacious, clean, comfortable and individually decorated. Everything that one could want is provided. The breakfasts are terrific - fresh and delicious! All tastes and dietary considerations are catered for. Last but not least are the hosts, Sally and Gerry who go out of their way to make all their guests feel welcome. Theyare a treasure-trove of useful information about where to go and what to to do and are friendly without being intrusive. Highly recommended.
Loved the Great Ponsonby
My wife and I have had two trips to Auckland in the past year and on both occadions have stayed at the Great Ponsonby Botique Hotel this establishment being recommended to us by freinds. On each occasion we have had an excellent stay with very comfortable tastefully decorated rooms with an ensuite,a great cooked breakfast to start each day and attentive staff who provided us with full details of all the local attractions ensuring that we were well briefed on how to reach each destiation. This was done in a pleasant manor without being overpowering. We would certainly recommend highly this Botique hotel whih is situated very close to transport and to the Auckland CBD.
The Great Ponsonby is GREAT
Great location to cafes, restaurants and Auckland
CBD. Excellent value with charming hosts where nothing is too much trouble.
I have stayed at the Great Ponsonby several times now and have never been disappointed. There is a choice of rooms and studios to suit all travellers and they are very well appointed with REALLY comfortable beds and pillows and lovely warm bathrooms.
The breakfasts are wonderful and there is always a diet breaker on the menu!
Will be back.
Home from home
I'm a Londoner based in Tokyo and wherever I travel I like to find a friendly and cultured place to stay, which the Great Ponsonby certainly is. One NZ guidebook warned that the B'n'B's there can be a little kitsch or old-fashioned (and two others I tried on my trip were), but the Ponsonby has just the right blend of modernity, artistic sense, comfort and warm welcoming atmosphere that makes me feel I'm home from home. This is mainly due to the wonderful manager Sally and her friendly, professional staff. And the breakfasts are an absolute feast! It's also in a great location not far from the beach, and next to the best street full of fine restaurants in Auckland. I was there for the first days of the millenium and really look forward to the next time. An unhesitating 5-star review from a seasoned worldwide traveller!
Coudn't ask for more
I stayed at the Great P B+B arriving to NZ from Europe and then again in a couple of other occasions.
Perfect location in a lively part of Auckand, at walking distance from the City and well served by public transport.
Friendly (and helpful) people. Speckless and fully equipped bedrooms; quite; outstanding breakfasts.
Couldn't ask for more.
Comfortable and quiet
I stayed here in October, 2001. Comfortable and clean rooms, very friendly and helpfull hosts, a good breakfast, and close to shops and resturants. What more could you want? It's also very close to the bus line into downtown Auckland.

Started the day off right with a huge breakfast – Gerry cooked
us omelets with spinach and smoked salmon – yum. Then off we went
to tour Auckland. The area we're staying in Ponsonby has a ton of
cafes, restaurants, and boutiques. But it doesn't feel crowded –
if you went into a store maybe there would be a …
Sunday Day Trip
Ate breakfast today with 2 Canadians who were great to talk with –
Caroline and Ralph. They lived on the North Island for 3 months,
Caroline is a doctor and worked at a clinic in a town which was 40%
Maori. We talked politics (they love Obama!), where to go in New
Zealand, and health care. In New Zealand everyone has …
