Welcome to WWOOFing and sandboarding!

... so off we puffed back to the top of the hill and whizzed down a second time. This time not managing to part company with my board! This massive hill conquered it was time to move on to more challenging things like attempting to snow board on the boards. A particularly difficult objective due to the lack of snowboards or at least straps to hold your feet onto the board. However with an expert snowboarder in our midst - Mark and many bumps and bruises to contend with the ...

Bay of Islands

We arrived in Auckland from Sydney in the afternoon and the following morning went to Wicked Campervan rentals to pick up our van. All of the vans have various graphics and writing on them and we got one with a large pink tattoo on the side and the writing, "elevators smell different to midgets" on the back. Because we had only allocated one week to the North Island, we decided not ...

The Bay of Islands

... to tell them all about my diving adventure the previous day. the Bay of Islands was quickly moving up "my favorite places in NZ" list, and I was in no hurry to get back to the hostel. I eventually got back just before dark and had a small dinner before heading to bed for the night. tomorrow I have planned to take the day trip (or "safari" as they call it) up to the very tip of NZ, to where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean collide. Cape Reigna.

Waiting in Kerikeri

... tidying/washing up - etc, Dance like nobodies watching, love like you've never been hurt and work like you don't need the money! I'm rubbish at one ane two but I'm giving three a whirl. It's not that I don't want the money and won't soon need it but right now I don't 'need'the money. The plan was though 1. Come to New Zealand 2. Get Bike 3. Go cycling 4. Pick fruit Having completed steps 1-3 I thought I'd ...

July 4th

... We walked along the beach and found a beached shark, it was one of the saddest things I have ever seen. I must have been really reasent because the body had not been eaten by the nirds yet. I took some more money out of the bank, I've already spent 300$ this week that's like 250 Canadian.. Most of it goes towards food, but here's the 90 some I spend on tours and presents for the people back home. The weather's really ...

On top of the world! Well ok, NZ anyway!

I had to get up really early, 5:30 :-S Caught the bus back to the airport and got chatting to a nice Dutch girl on the bus. She was doing a bit of a mad trip too for a few weeks! See, I'm not the only one ;-) She too felt that for just a bit more than a flight to NZ, you could get a RTW ticket instead. I got off at the Domestic airport for my flight up to Kaitaia. I went through and boarded the tiniest plane I have ever seen! It had the propellers on the outside, the ones I ...

How to Kill a Fish in the Face

... off to far deeper than I can dive. There were fish everywhere, Blue Moamoa, tiny snapper, baitfish in huuuge schools and even a few Leatherjackets. I quickly spotted some mussels growing on top of the structure and was blown away by their size, easily 6 or 7 inches long and half that wide. I started yanking them off the rocks but kept running out of air by the time I'd grabbed one or two. They really hold on by the time they get that big. Silvan told me the big ...

Relaxing at the Bay of Islands

... it is also of enormous historical significance. As the site of the first permanent English settlement, it is the birthplace of European colonisation. It was here that the treaty of Waitangi was drawn up in 1840 where 46 Maori chiefs signed up but even now days this can cause tension between the Maoris and the descendants of the early European settlers. This treaty may have initially appealed to the Maoris as they valued the profit and prestige the local Europeans brought especially the ...

WEEK THREE, DRINKING, DANCING, DINING!

... fed with this boil up and bread smothered two inches thick in butter, I hate butter!! The boil up was interesting to say the least, very VERY oily and strong lamb flavour! No anybody who knows me will know that I cant hide my face or feelings very well when I am eating something that I dont like! I was really struggling to put this food down and to hold it down! Brian said my face was a picture! So after dinner I made our excuses and left in a ...
