Soldiers, horses and ice.

Hello again, dear travelers. I have had a most exciting time over the last few days. I am in Melbourne, and had a day off to see the city, so I went touring around some of the gardens in the city centre. Very pretty, though parking was a problem.

Then today, I was stationed in Ballarat, so yesterday I took the time to go and explore some of the goldfield history. There's a place in Ballarat called Sovereign Hill, which is a recreation of an old gold-mining town. It was ...

Living in the Gold Rush

... region around the small town of Great Western. There we visited two winerys that began in the 1860's. Settlers moved into that area during that time as there was a major gold rush during that time. Two brothers started two winerys and those are the two we visited. The first was the Best Winery. The winery was started by one of the Best brothers and is run by another family that bought it in the early 1900's. It is ...

Melbourne to Singapore

... We returned to the airport at about 17.30pm and boarded the Austrian Airlines plane at 18.40pm to Singapore. On the way we had an excellent meal with salmon and a delicious desert along with whatever we wanted to drink. As we had a cheap fare, we thought it was pretty good. It was a new plane and was reasonably spacious and comfortable.

... weeks in Melbourne, we decided to make a 'B' line to Ballarat. Got talked into (and convinced ourselves) to visit Sovereign Hill, which had won the best tourist attraction in Australia for the 5th successive year at the Tourism Awards only one week before - basically this is as good as it gets for Oz! ... or Green Mountains in the US. In the Australian winter (July), the mountain is covered with snow and this becomes a major ski centre. We stopped for another toasted sandwich (they're everywhere!) for lunch at the mountaintop lodge. There are several rather scary cliff-top lookout points. But the real bonus for me was the parrot-like birds (I forget what kind they were) in the parking lot! People were hand feeding them! One landed on Lynn's head. They were ...
