What an excellent day. The weather wasn’t perfect but that’s a good thing because who would want to be driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway when the clouds are so low you don’t have a view anyway? It showered and the sun came and went and by the end of the day it felt like a late summer evening - warm and sultry. I stayed at a very nice state park in North Carolina, listening to the cicadas in ...

... a route to rock-hop across. We then followed Raider Camp Trail up a series of switchbacks and took a spur trail to the cliff overlook for South Harper Creek Falls. This is the only spot where you can see both the upper and lower portions of the waterfall and get a good idea of the complete size of this waterfall. Far below, we could see the rocks at the base where we had eaten lunch. It was a long way down. After enjoying the view for a little ...

Although there are no signs or blazes, I believe that this is Greentown Shortcut Trail (#268A). Although it ...

... Don joined Claudia and myself for my NASCAR Experience that Claudia gave for my birthday the month before. What an experience! Me alone in the #24 with top speed of 143 mph. The pictures tell the story. Thanks Don for some great photos! We met Don and Trish for great brunch along side Lake Norman. While on the road we decided that we weren't quite ready to go home ...

... in Morganton and headed north on NC-181. In about 17 miles, we turned left on Forest Road 228 and proceeded to the end. Although this road seemed pretty remote, there were a lot of people camping at the spots near the end. After parking, we got our stuff ready and started hiking the Steels Creek Trail (#237). The trail was a continuation of the road for about a quarter-mile to a nice swimming hole below ...
