... year. At least 1000 of them were laying on the beach in this area and honestly looked dead. But the grunts and tail flicks told you they were just sleeping or hanging out. Very cool and very weird. A quick dinner in town and back to our hotel (with a fireplace and patio) on moonstone beach. Tomorrow we mozy up the best bit of the coast through Big Sur, Pebble Beach, Carmel and stopping in Monterey. Miss you ...

It was basic in as much as breakfast was wrapped in plastic and came on paper plates, the wifi crashed after 30 minutes and you spent all night wondering if that noise was someone stealing your car. ... in Big Sur for lunch and what I can only describe as a typical American lodge - wooden lodge covered with American flags cans of beer in cool boxes bargain at only $2 it was laid back with the baseball on. ... fighting and generally having a jolly god time. For all I know it could have been a harem! I leave them basking in the late afternoon sunshine as we make the final stretch of our journey south to San Luis Obispo.

As beautiful and as wild as this (well travelled) bit of coastline is, I have to say that my heart was won with the coastline north of San Francisco. Somehow life there seemed more remote, more real, more rugged and the Pacific roared more. ...
