Wait! Another NPS and Another Drive-In? Yes!

... We got lost--but only a bit, and managed to make the start of the movie--just.

The drive-in is Malco in Memphis, and I can't say I recommend it much. The plant is in terrible shape: they carved two small areas for screens out of existing fields, but, as the ramps are concrete, they didn't bother to remake the ramps, so they don't face the screen. The food stand is understaffed. The food is loosely "serve yourself," but that relies ...

... without any further drama. And only a few light flashes and claps of thunder. Our biggest excitement of the day was a trip to the local laundromat to resupply our ward robe selection. We finally lifted the threat of "double duty" with the clothes and underwear. The steady rain and threat of local flash floods, kept us from exploring the countryside. The fact that is is Sunday, meant that most everything was closed anyway. The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame was open on Sunday - so ...

We enjoyed another delicious breakfast with Jeanette, our host at the B&B. Jeanette is a fascinating Ol' Southern Belle who enjoys her drinking - her afternoon wine she calls her "Toddy for the body". She invited her B&B guests to share her morning "libation". She also taught us the difference between the morning libation and the evening cocktail. She served her guests frosty glasses of special "Milk Punch". A potent mix of frozen milk, rum, brandy and ...

... Complex. The main house is still a private residence owned by Betty Hertzog who is a descendent of the original LeComptes family. These plantations are located a fair distance from town and the Red River was the primary mode of transportation. When the river changed its course it changed the economy of the plantations. Unlike what you see in the movies, life was not all that glamorous. These were working farms which were subject ...

... most of the time. On the road for about 5 hours except for a Starbucks and bathroom stop. Natchitoches is a very pretty town with a fascinating history. It was founded in 1714 as a French outpost on the Red River to facilitate trade with the Spanish in Mexico. The town is named after the local Native American tribe. There was a log jam during the 1830's and the Red River ...
