We took a tour of Athens on the 16th, for about 1/2 day with Yanni, our taxi driver. He was very knowledgeable, and took us to the Acropolis, the Olympic Stadium, the Temple of Athena, and Hadrian Library, among others. We had a delicious lunch in Plaka. I had Greek lasagna, I can't really describe it except to say it was delicious. He took us to the airport, and it was on to Rome!
Athens, Attica, Greece cocacolacathy... except on tv.. crazy!
I'm sure if you google Greece flooding yesterday something will come up!
Athens is a dump town and I'm super disappointed.. On our way into the city we were informed that this trip would not include seeing the white houses with blue roofs.. MAJOR disappointment.. I will defintiely come back and just do a tour of Santorini or Mykonos!
The ferry from Bari, Italy to Patras, Greece was ...
... just lie around and never approach you but we have read that sometime they travel in packs and can scare the tourists. I think they drug them. There seem lethargic and sleepy.
We've walked the streets of Athens, the "Plaka" and then some. One evening we made our way around the same loop three times. Frank says that there are “Ernie’s” everywhere! And they “the Greek” people in general are incredibly friendly and ...
... Slumdog Millionaires last night- excellent movie, and made it about 1/2 way through Neither Here nor There by Bill Bryson- really funny book that's worth a read. I don't have room reservations for tonight but that's what I'm figuring out today. My plan is to stay in Athens for a couple more nights and then go out to the islands. Time to explore!
Athens, Attica, Greece ladysado... that's what you get for putting them all so close together and then knowing your clients are too dumb to figure out a secure key so having to use open). It comes and goes a little bit but it's internet! On my laptop! In Greece! (I should download Top Gear... Okay kidding.) Tomorrow the Acropolis and as many temples as I can fit in a day before I die of this awful heat.
Athens, Attica, Greece bubba_oliver... of Dionysus were currently undergoing restoration and had scaffolding all over them. I felt a bit cheated to be honest. The scaffolding didn't hinder my ability to SEE the monuments, but it really did screw up the pictures I tried to take, thus forcing me to buy postcards of the sites. The postcard industry is probably a racket paying the restoration contractors to leave their scaffolding up for extended periods of time....OK, maybe not, but it makes for a good conspiracy ...
Athens, Greece tbassplayerHi After a good breakfast we left Athens for Patros where are to get a Fast ferry to Ancona and then travel to San Marino. Weather is great and after 1.5 hours we had a half hour comfort stop near Corinth. Jackie did a little shopping and after a Powerade we were again on the way. The route we are using is the reverse we used to get to Athens. This is because the fires have made the alternative route unsafe. We arrived at Patros - our embarkation ...
Ancona, Greece warwicksoption... though I don't know that I'd dignify it with the appellation Zoo! It had a few goats, some rabbits and a whole yard full of poultry. About the only thing even approaching wild life was an aviary with 5 peacocks in it. We rambled through the cool garden, eventually finding the children's playground. There were some pretty unique rides for kids there and interestingly, the floor was carpeted with a thick rubber matting, overlaid with sand so the ...
Athens, Greece indiantraveler... ouzo is low. It is ten and we have not eaten. Joe wants us all to go eat at his restaurant now for dinner- Alekos says no (I thank him silently), we will do so tomorrow at decent time (he later states, the restaurant closes at 10- the staff would have to work late for us, he wont do it- he has worked in restaurants all his life- and he says a free meal is not worth it with Joe.) Finally Joe and Bob leave- Joe drunkenly. Irenee starts to re heat the lamb stew I did not eat- it ...
Athens, Greece tomsmidlife... the stone piles. However, the Agora’s administrators could assist the process by placing better descriptions at each of the ruins. Even with the inadequate signage, it is still a thrill to be standing in front of the New Bouleuterion, where Pericles argued for his plans. Realizations like this are a good reason why one should have a detailed map of the area.
There is no ambiguity when viewing the Temple of Hephaistos. It’s one of the few temples (if not ...
