21 Agiou Thoma Athens, Attica, Greece, 19002
We took a tour of Athens on the 16th, for about 1/2 day with Yanni, our taxi driver. He was very knowledgeable, and took us to the Acropolis, the Olympic Stadium, the Temple of Athena, and Hadrian Library, among others. We had a delicious lunch in Plaka. I had Greek lasagna, I can't really describe it except to say it was delicious. He took us to the airport, and it was on to Rome!
Athens, Attica, Greece cocacolacathy... bathrooms with Jacuzzi and a good shower system, computers with internet connection, cocktail bars, snack bars, restaurants catering international and local cuisine, salons, laundry service, pools, lounge areas and most importantly good room service.
However, each Corfu hotel differs from one another in some way or the other. If you prefer the mountain views then you would automatically search ...
... When I got back, I showered and ran to the bus station to catch the bus back to the capital. There I took an overnight ferry back to Athens. I ended up sleeping a couple-few hours on a bench in the lunch room because their chairs were very uncomfortable. This morning I headed back to the center of Athens to try and find a guidebook in English. It's normally a 1/2 hour trip on the train that ended up taking me 2 hours. There was a lot of construction on ...
Athens, Attica, Greece ladysado... of a dinner. After a well needed night of sleep we were off to the Acropolis for a close up view. The metro took us close by and then a short walk up the Acropolis with ruins to see the whole way up. What a trill to see the Parthenon close up. This is a day I have been dreaming about most of my life. They no longer let people walk inside plus there is a major rebuilding project under way. Our admiration ...
Athens, Attica, Greece theskinners... us so we took the road. We set ourselves small tasks - like just to the next corner, or to the big rock and then pretended we had stopped to see the view. The sun was really hot and the road so steep but we made it finally and rewarded our selves with a much needed swim. Still now 2 days later our legs are crying our every time we take a step! But we did it and have scared our selves off from taking on any further adventures for a while ...
Athens, Attica, Greece annette_dutton... t as chaotic as I had imagined it would be. I can't even really describe what it felt like to be touring around these incredibly ancient monuments, most of which I've had the good fortune to study in detail already, and so am familiar with a great deal of their significance. Although it's somewhat sad at how much has been lost, what remains is awe-inspiring - which of course leaves one to wonder at how amazing it must have ...
Athens, Greece joseph_hillier... then took a train one of those ones you could really run faster then, to the middle of nowhere, then switched to hop on a train to get us to Athens. Sounds like fun eh! Well once in Athens after finding a bathroom as both Becky and myself were not feeling good, we believe it is due to the spaghetti balognese on the ferry ship. But yes so now we had to search for our hostel. The Athens International Youth Hostel! After walking for what felt like ...
Athens, Greece erinbobarin... so basically every time you lift your arm, water comes streaming out from your elbow onto the floor. Exciting! Challenging! How do you actually get clean??? It is tricky. But hey, finally somewhere affordable to stay - heck anything is after Italy I suppose! And also something about Greek plumbing: no where yet that I've ben here lets you put paper into the toilet. It's basically forbidden. So how does that work. Well you just hang ...
Athens, Greece ashygag... otherwise, our journey would have included a 3-hour train to a 15-hour ferry followed by another 3-4 hour train- no thanks! Surprisingly, we didn't experience the new wave of "security" we were warned about and successfully smuggled shampoo onboard! As for the flight, Aegean airlines rocks. We boarded on-time (all at one time versus by zones or rows, much quicker), were served a full meal with coffee and tea (offered at least twice between take off and landing), and landed ...
Athens, Greece the_stamms... br>
After our time in the stadium, we bought our tickets for the trip to Hydra. Then it was back across the Zappion to Amalias. We had a brochure for Key Tours which showed the main office to be just south of the Temple of Olympian Zeus on Kallirrois. We started walking down Amalias. Soon enough, we ran across the Temple of Olympian Zeus. This temple was the largest classical temple ever built. Today only 15 standing columns and one fallen column remain of this massive ...
