Next day we drove through the town of Monticello, a couple of deer bounding across the road as we entered. This is the heart of San Juan - the area settled by the Mormons after crossing the Colorado in Glen Canyon. Headed east on H491 through rich farming/cropping land, interspersed by scrub and forest land that would be still good grazing country. This continued all the way to the Colorado state line.

God Done Good When He Built This

... And then it will downshift again when you push harder. So going down 2000 feet I was able to keep the coach about 40 mph with no heating of my brakes.

As you can see by the title, God really done good when he created this area. To me this is absolute paradise. As you look at the pictures you will be able to tell that we are going up and up. Remember, the tree line in this area is about 11000 feet. ...

You Don't Have to be Crazy, But it Helps!

... but it was all still incredible! The grandkids and grandparents all walked up the hillside a short ways, where we took - and posed for - many pictures! We also tried acting out a pose from Sound of Music, seeing as we were in the Switzerland of America, but this picture didn't work out quite as well as we had envisioned. It was still fun to try though!

We also took some pictures of us with the jeep, with the striking backdrop ...

... I'm not a shopper and dodging the cold rain wasn't fun, so after buying a hand-made spirit bear for our Christmas tree and some fudge we started back. We stopped to look at a road-side waterfall and wildflowers just outside Silverton and again at Andrews Lake which is a beautiful day use area. We could have happily spent an afternoon exploring there if it hadn't been 56 degrees with rain on the verge of hail and thunder/lightening all around us! ...
