Historical Traveler Reviews Southside Guest House Edinburgh

Great weekend at Southside guesthouse!

from anonymous

Just got back from a lovely weekend in Edinburgh, stayed at the Southside guesthouse, which we loved. Lot's of attention to (every possible) detail, beautifull interior, great atmosphere and an epic breakfast. Franco's coffee/ristretto/capucino alone is reason enough to visit the place! Next time in Edinburgh we will choose Southside again!

Ideally situated for parents of uni students

Choosing accommodation from the internet is always risky but this was a chance worth taking. We were impressed by the stylish decor and the attention paid to detail. The proprietors have taken care to create an individual feel to each room. The house is modern, yet retains it's period charm. As parents of an Edinburgh student in halls of residence, Southside was ideally situated for visiting her. She was also made very welcome and was able to join us for breakfast for a small additional charge. Whilst she took advantage of the offer of 'real' food, we were able to enjoy her company! We will certainly use Southside for the inevitable return visits!

Artistic flair and great service

from anonymous

My wife and I needed to spend a couple of nights in Edinburgh twice recently and found Southside Guest House on the web. Our experience the first time was so memorable that we had no hesitation in booking again for our return visit.

From the start, Lynne's reply to our email enquiry was prompt and warm. The Guest House is well positioned and our welcome on arrival was warm and friendly. We were struck immediately by the artistic flair evidenced in the decoration and furnishings which made the comfortable surroundings a pleasure to be in.

Franco's welcome in the dining room matched the high standard of food and the flexibility shown in catering for our odd timings. Attention to detail in all areas was outstanding.

We thoroughly enjoyed our two visits and have no hesitation in recommending Southside Guest House as an excellent place to stay in Edinburgh at very reasonable cost. Indeed we have already done so to friends and family.

A beautiful guest house

from anonymous

My partner and I recently spent a long weekend in Edinburgh and had a wonderful 3 nights' stay at Southside guest house. This is a very special place; it is warm and luxurious, the hosts are extremely welcoming and the breakfast is amazing. The personal touches are what really make this place stand out - you just don't get this in a large hotel.

I highly recommend the four poster suite for an extra-special romantic break in a beautiful, historic city. We are already planning our return!

A very nice hotel build around an espresso machine

from anonymous

This is one of the nicest hotels I've ever been in, although it may not be classified as typically British; the breakfast is tasty and healthy, the coffee is Italian, and the interior design is modern and tasteful. Further assets: friendly atmosphere, good service, internet and DVD players in every room, and showers with high water pressure. All in all: A great place!

A SHORT BREAK IN EDINBURGH

from anonymous

The Southside Guest House is a great place to stay for your trip to Edinburgh! The food is excellent, the hospiltality warm and very friendley. Each room is unique in decor, and to a very high standard. Location, it is a short ten minutes walk to the city centre and all the main attractions that Edinburgh has to offer. Had a great time there, would diffenatley book to stay again!!!!!!!!

A fantastic weekend break!

My girlfriend and I had a fantastic stay at Southside. The room was amazing, with wooden floors, a high ceiling and fantastic decor, and came with an equally fantastic en-suite bathroom. The room also had a TV with DVD player, and with the guesthouse providing an array of various DVDs it proved a nice idea. Another impressive feature was the availability of free wireless broadband internet.

The breakfasts were also nothing short of excellent, each morning coming with the addition of a special ingredient or recipe (in our case bucks fizz one morning, smoked salmon the next!).

The rates were extremely competitive and we were made to feel very welcome. The location is also excellent, only 10/15 mins stroll from the centre, yet far enough away to exclude the noise of the city.

All in all, a great stay at a fantastic guesthouse. Recommended!

Simply Outstanding!

from anonymous

This charming continently located guesthouse exceeded all my expectations! I liked the personal touch that I felt in everything: room decor (tasteful), breakfast selections (yummy), service (caring). Highly recommended!!!

Well recommended, will stay again.

We had a really enjoyable stay in the Southside Guest Hotel. Go for one of the 4-poster rooms - well worth it. Ours had a chesterfield suite and private terrace and superb decor. The proprietors are very welcoming and provided a very satisfactory service - breakfast is excellent. Next time we're in Edinburgh we know where to come!

Wonderful luck

from anonymous

My wife and I visited Scotland for the first time in about 40 years last June. We spent time on Mull and then had to find accommodation in Edinburgh without having made any specific plans. The "wonderful luck" of our title is simply that a travel person at the airport phoned around on our behalf until she located a bedroom for us at Southside Guest House. Franco and Lynne, the proprietors were just what weary travellers rejoice in finding. Their guest house is comfortable and central and both of them were so friendly and just plain nice that we felt good about our time spent with them, which because of other travel plans was only one night.

When I mentioned to my wife this evening that I wished to write a short review, her immediate response was that "I really liked them and should we not go back to Edinburgh because our last visit was too short?" Since we have been to other guest houses this is high praise indeed, because other pleasant places have not evoked that response. She says that she particularly liked the general feeling of quality and the superb breakfast next morning.

When we returned to South Africa I actually sent them an e-mail invitation to visit us in SA where we live near Hermanus, which is a great whaling tourist area. We have never issued such an invitation before and it does indicate how much they personally impressed us both. We DO recommend them very happily.
