    Another day of skiing!

A travel blog entry by matt-hryniewicz on Mar 01, 2015

Went skiing with the Reidy's and their cousins. Jay Peak is definitely a must on a skiers list. Some sweet glade skiing for novices. Packed powder. 25 degrees. Barely a breeze. A couple of quads and a tram bought you to the top. Sitting on the Canadian border in northern Vermont, it's quite remote making for small lift lines. It was a four hour ride but the ride back was a bit more interesting with the impending ...

... diner down the road. It was actually really a good home cooked breakfast with home made bread! Good portions and good food. It was the diner experience I could appreciate after so many BAD diner experiences on this trip. After breakfast we managed to find our way all the way to Vermont and to the Ben and Jerry’s factory! Then northwards to the leafy and exclusive surroundings of Stowe, a ski resort for much of the year and home to some very swanky homes and clubs. Our motel has a beautiful setting by the river among trees and a cut above yesterday's poorish stopover. Supper at Gracie's in Stowe and back to bed and more medication. ...

Today we saw the home of Chester Arthur, our 21st president. He was one of only two presidents from Vermont, the other being Calvin Coolidge, and according to my father, his main claim to fame was "Not being as bad a president as everyone expected".

Though the date and place of his birth are disputed, it is generally agreed that he was born in late 1829-mid 1830, ...

... to Val d'Isere in France, where we skied for a week on our honeymoon in 1999. I love skiing! But we live in La Quinta because we like to be warm and hate to be cold. As a result, skiing has pretty much become a distant memory. When it's 75 degrees and sunny all winter where you live, how can you in good conscience, go to a ski area and intentionally inflict cold upon yourself?

Still, after reading about eastern US ski areas for so many ...
