... but after 2 miles spotted them another mile or more away on a bald knob. We decided not to pursue them, but enjoyed the views along the way. This is a lovely highland area that reminded us much of our home in West Virginia, and Dolly Sods Wilderness area, which is in our own backyard. Still, one never tires of such beauty, wherever it may be found!
After our hike we drove back to Marion, Virginia, and had a late lunch at a barbeque place there.
We met up with AJ (our nephew) and Allison, who are hiking the Appalachian Trail. We had breakfast together at the Apple Tree Restaurant in Marion, and they told us all about their adventure on the trail. They are 1/4 of the way through and Virginia has the longest stretch of trail. They took a week off for AJ to collect his PHD diploma, then headed back on the trail. It was a welcome change from what ...

But I normally wake up at least a few times a night with sore or stiff legs, and I wanted plenty of sleep since I was going to do big miles that day as well. The day's hike, while slightly longer than the previous day's, was easier and yet probably a bit more grueling coming as it did on the heels of the previous day. Other hikers had referred to it as the marathon, as a lot of people tend to do that stretch ...
