    Waking up in Carson City, we realize how close to California -Home!- we are. The kids can't wait to cross the California border line at Lake Tahoe, the kids test the water, and we HAVE to do a "Welcome back to California" family picture in front of the Lake.

    Sunny & clear:  17-38c Sorted out gear and started packing for Africa!  We fly out tomorrow morning, so it's finally about to happen!!  Long flight with three connections (ugh!!) and we don't get there until 7pm the following day (Friday) but there is a 7 or 8 hour difference.     ... Tembes in Atlanta all in a period of two months! Without an eight week sabbatical (thanks to Intel!), this wouldn't have been possible. Both Dora and I feel blessed to have had this opportunity to enjoy this sabbatical.

    The group departed Davis early hoping to beat the heat on a 65 mile journey into the foothills of the Sierra Mountains. Memorial Day festivities made for crowded travel on the 30 miles of the American River bike trail but the mild weather and shade from the old oak trees made the ride comfortable. Beyond Folsom the heat and road traffic picked up and made the rising highway grades more of a challenge.
