... br> I walked up the Royal Mile to the castle entrance, bought my admission ticket for 14 pounds ($21.42), and kept climbing through Portcullis Gate into the lower ward. The castle last saw military action in 1745. From then until the 1920s it served as the British Army's main base in Scotland. It apparently takes three hours to set the table, and when the Royal family dined there, the plates and cutlery were all measured with a ruler to ensure they were placed precisely where they should be. Behind that is the palatial Ballroom which consists of a smaller entry room with the larger room behind it. There’s also a Bar there and drinks would be served by Stewards.
