Day 8 - 120 miles in the BMW

I set off this morning looking for a group of surfers on the beach, but by the time that I got there at around 9am I guess they had realised that the waves (surf) was not all that good in Thurso and they must have moved on. I had a look for them on my way but I couldn't see them, I guess they must have gone the other way up the coast.

I set out with all good intentions of getting to SYHA Durness and stopping there for the night while ...

... full 5 minutes feeling relaxed and in control. My stomach stopped hurting, although my shoulders still needed linament at night. We drove almost 1000 miles, managed not to wreck the car, or hit anything alive. It is a proven fact, however, that you can scrape a curb at 45 mph and not blow the tire.

We drove west from Inverness, out to the Applecross Peninsula, truly one of the most beautiful places on earth. I wish we could have stayed longer, but then I said ...

... to Smoo cave. We took the boat trip into the back cave. Very interesting, the guy obviously loved his job. Another trip to Cocoa Mountain. Excellent hot chocolate but I've had better, we had sneaked in a trip yesterday too. Back to the cottage but we had a nice coastal walk to a beech nearby to paddle in the cold water. The sun had really just come out which was perfect. A seal watched us for a while, we think we were on it's beech. Audrey made copious amounts of fantastic pasta.

... reformed later, there were a few quiet moments over cottage pie and chips but by the time we had polished off the swiss roll and custard we were all friends again. The final day was the crowning moment of the trip. We had made it over to Ullapool and began the walk in to An Teallach. This was the day I realised that Great Britain has pockets of beauty that were the match for any of the places I had visited in the States, New Zealand of Asia. There was no sign of human ...

... didn't seem to change much from there, and giving in we made our way back down to the car. The weather really did let us down on the trip, almost ruining all but two of the hikes we did. However, that was the Scottish Highlands, and we couldn't really have expected anything less. The blue skies we were rewarded with at the summit of Bla Bheinn were also something I'm sure many travelers to the north of Scotland never saw. So there was no point in complaining. If anything, the ...

... a matter of seconds he ran out though, saying it was so cold it physically hurt. We spent a bit of time climbing on the rocks, breathing in the salty sea air before heading back to the hostel for a spot of dinner and a good night's sleep before the big hike the next day. Unfortunately the next day started badly. We slept in more than two hours, and the news on the weather front wasn't encouraging. It was blowing an absolute gale outside. Given what we knew about ...

... This took 3 minutes. Obstacle 2: we were caught behind a biker who insisted on using the centre of the road. He stopped us to ask the ferry to wait for him. Or something. Obstacle 3: two sheep ran down the road ahead of the car and refused to deviate. They were finally led off by another. Obstacle 4: we almost ran head on into another car and had to wait while they backed into a parking place. Obstacle 5: the ferry off to a different dock about a minute ere we ...
