More Wine!

... our fresh baguette, cheese and salami lunch looking out at the great view.

Then back down to Pollak Vineyards. Again, a very nice tasting room - Casey poured for us and we came away with the 2008 Durant White, blend.

Then to Veritas where we did BOTH kinds of wine; red and white. This was by far the busiest of the tasting rooms ...

... bottles a year there, which is only 1% of the bottles produced by all of the Zonin's vineyards (the other 10 are in Italy). Frank, who did our tasting was a delight. They are very proud of their Octagon red blend. We took home a bottle of the Reserve C******nay.

Next to Burnley, home of Cooper the wine dog (*******************). Small operation, but friendly ...

The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia

... dismantled, shipped and reconstructed on a large site together with examples of early American houses to demonstrate what early immigrants had left behind and how the melding of these various influences created the American homesteads of the 19th Century. It was surprisingly interesting and we all loved it. Amongst other things, we were shown how flax is turned into Linen – the 18th Century way – and we all had the chance to try stripping the ...

... food, especially breakfast. Got some salmon hash that came like eggs benedict. IT WAS AMAZING!!!! First night we went to Fellini's and had a bottle of wine. It was really nice!! Definitely partied hard with these guys, although I could not really keep up. Had a blast. On the way down to Duck we stopped by his friend Stephen's.

Background Information and Pre-Trip

Not an ice cream!

... Mulberry Row tour, which painted a very vivid picture of life as a slave. This was a ‘street’ 1000ft. long, a rough track lined with mulberry trees along about 100 slaves lived and worked at one time there were 17 buildings along it, but as they were mostly wooden structures, little survives today. It must have been a constant dilemma for Jefferson, he depended on slaves to run his plantation and estate and yet declared that ...

It rained on our parade...

... that in order to kill time we'd head down to Charlottesville's historic district and check out several cute stores!  While we browsing there was a lot going on as people had gathered to thrown a Tea Party in protest of the current governement...it was interesting to see it live as we were hearing about them on the news.  When we exhausted that area we drove over to Jeffereson Vineyards for a quick tasting ...

Dinner

Cont'd Dinner was at an Italian Restaurant called Espresso Italian Villa - surprise, pasta again. Tanner had a dream that pasta was attacking him. Spencer had a dream that he ate spaghetti and meatballs. It came true for dinner. During the bus ride back, the boys conquered the girls in a Q and A hosted by Mr. Washington. All questions were about Virginia. Continued ...

Detour / Monticello

... It took me awhile to figure out how this sun-dial worked. Around the globe is a movable ring which you would rotate until it casted a thin shadow line on the markings for the time of day. I walked underneath the North Porch which contained the carriage house, stables and ice house. Connecting the two porches was a underground passageway, where the wine and beer was stored...the entrance was roped off so I could not check to ...

Getting ready

... as Belize and Honduras. I should have regular email, and brief cell phone use for the next 6 months so don't hesitate to drop a line or call to check up on me. It's pretty difficult to post pictures on this site, so I'll let you know where all my pictures are going - most likely facebook. Ok, time to start packing......
