... a good time. In fact, all five nights we went out with a different group of people we met at the hostel. The first night we met three hilarious French guys who took us out to a club and showed us a good time.

Our rooming situation could also not have been more ideal. Not the accommodation necessarily— I sweat myself to sleep every night in our fourth floor sauna, and the shower had a mind of its own in terms of temperature ...

... one was for political prisoners who were not Jews, the other was for Jews who were being punished for some reason. The treatment of ordinary prisoners was bad enough, but the prison went even further for the Jews. Prisoners normally slept three to a bunk in wooden bunks with only a blanket and a bucket and wash basin by the door. Jews slept in empty cells on concrete floors with nothing. ... towns of Strasbourg and Colmar, Mulhaus and Stuttgart, returning to the "most American city in Germany" (do the Frankfurters realise this is not a plus?) via another beautiful University town, Heidelberg.

It is not really necessary to outline the why's and wherefore's of the pre-tour developments but the four day bike ride became a two-week adventure which took in much of the above but not the Stuttgart component and ended up with me crossing ...
