Zur Geschichte der Stadt und des Art-déco-Stils: Am 3. Februar 1931 erschütterte ein heftiges Erdbeben die Stadt Napier. Nach nur 3 Minuten lag ein großer Teil der Gebäude in Schutt und Asche, 256 Menschen starben. Innerhalb von 3 Jahren entstand eine neue Stadt.
