cold again!

... we had a bit of a run up which meant we got a bit wet with the windows open- I pulled over across the other side and flagged down a car as it didn't feel right to be a main road, ad thats because it wasn't! We were headed in completely the wrong direction some how- so we went back and found the correct route 6 road! We stopped and had tuna sandwhiches (again) and then walked half an hour to the Haast blue pools- which were so clear you could ...

Doing the Fox Trot

... views of Mount Tasman and Mount Cook, New Zealand's 2nd largest and largest mountains respectively. Whilst the cloudy skies over the mountains prohibited a clear shot, I did manage to capture a reflection!

Off to Wanaka tomorrow, which is an important day for New Zealand football. The New Zealand All Whites will face Bahrain at the Westpac Stadium, a match which will see one of the teams qualify for next year’s World Cup following the 0-0 first leg in Bahrain.

... into groups and our group was told to walk up a ramp to where the helicopter was waiting so we were getting very excited. Then she told us that they had to wait for some more cloud to clear and they were giving us 30mins - the time came and went and they couldn't chance going ahead with the heli hike just in case the clouds rolled in when we were finished and the chopper wouldn't be able to take off and we would be stranded on the glacier ...

Our 1st day of 4 in Queenstown.
I set out across town to discover the cost and chioces for ski-ing. Turned out to be quite suitable with 2 major ski fields nearby and accessible by tour buses included in the cost for a 3 day package to include 1 hrs private lesson for me (I ...

Cold as Ice and Willing to Sacrifice Your Love

As there were only two backpackers in Fox Glacier Township, only one of which was BBH (meaning I get a discount), my choices were limited, so I moved into Ivory Tower Backpackers. The following day I set out to explore the glacier. I had decided to just do the trails around the area rather than pay the exorbitant fees charged for tours actually on the ice.

I immediately discovered one of the downsides to traveling on your own with no means of ...

Fox

It is only a short drive from Franz Josef to the even smaller village of Fox, which in turn is famous for....yes that's right, the Fox Glacier! We our booked in to do a day hike of the glacier the following day at 9 am, so we find ourselves somewhere to stay the night, make a packed lunch and get an early night. By the way ...

Have you ever walked on a glacier?

... ice and you can't destroy a glacier with your fingernail! I know that if we had moved higher up the glacier the ice would have appeared deeper blue, a bit clearer of dirt and debris, and become even more majestic. You could tell we had only just scraped the surface. Nevertheless, I was glad to have only done a half a day because I was exhausted by the end of the day. It is no easy task walking on ice! I slept well that night.

Well now that all of the boring stuff is out of the way we can start with the more interesting stories. On Monday i flew to Christchurch where i was picked up by an uncle, i stayed at my Aunty and Uncles house in Lyttelton where i got to see some cousins in which i have only seen 2 times before, and its great to see how they had grown up. The next day i had a kiwi experience bus to catch from Cathedral square, the bus ...

Franz Josef Glacier

We couldn't afford a guided tour so the next day we went on a trek to get as close to the glacier as we could by ourselves. Yet again it was raining, but not all the time so we dried out a bit in between downpours! It's really strange walking up to the glacier because the surrounding area is a lush rainforest and with 7m annual rainfall its surprising that the glacier doesn't melt. We had to walk ...
