Nevskiy Prospekt and Beyond

The quintessential experience of travelling in St. Petersburg is to walk down Nevskiy Prospekt, the main boulevard lined with outrageously ornate buildings and breathe the car exhaust and cigarette smoke from people passing by. As I observed the city in the morning chill, the feeling of grandeur dulled by dirtiness was almost overbearing. It seemed as if no one had bothered to clean the buildings after a hundred years, and perhaps no one would clean them for another hundred years. I thought ...

The Hermitage

After we finished our lunch of meat-filled pastries, our tour guide Albina led us on to the second half of our day through the Hermitage. The entrance to the Hermitage was at the Winter Palace building, from the side facing the Palace Square opposite the sweeping façade along the river. Here the sprawling General Staff and Ministry of War buildings embraced the plaza where kids were practicing rollerblading stunts. A radio station sponsoring some kind of youth event was handing out free caps;...

Peter and Paul Fortress

We had the second day in St. Petersburg to ourselves, so Kathie and I decided to see the Peter and Paul Fortress. We took the bus to the Hermitage and walked across two bridges over two branches of the Neva River to get to Hare's Island where the fortress was located. We probably should have taken the bridge further east across the Neva because when we reached the citadel we found the entrance was located beyond a long stretch of beachfront. As Kathie complained about the trek over sand in t...

Catherine's Palace

When the gates were opened, everyone gasped. The palace seemed to stretch as far as a football field. Within seconds, the Chinese tour group that followed at our heels started taking snapshots and videos. We almost didn't come here. By the third day we felt our experience in St. Petersburg was complete, so we decided to visit one of the royal palaces located in the outlying areas. Our first choice Peterhof, however, was closed. Catherine's Palace was the next choice; I knew it had to be a wi...

Old Capital St. Petersburg

A short flight from Moscow (though with some of the most annoying security checks ever), our second stop in Russia was in St. Petersburg. The city is completely different from Moscow...much more European and pedestrian friendly, with lovely canals dividing some of the streets. We visited the incredible Hermitage, and wandered through ...

Loving St. Petersburg

... pancakes. Both were yummy. Our group broke up then and we went to see the inside of the Church of the Spilled Blood where there were MANY mosaics of Christ's life and stories of the Bible. Such amazing artwork to try to take in. Afterwards, we went to a souvenir market to scope out a few things and guess what we saw? TCU and A&M Babushka dolls! AND they let us take a picture of them! So cool. While we were there we of course saw more brides ...

... good to rest for a second and catch out breath. It didn't last long as we gathered again to begin drinking. The drinking began with a celebration of Simon, a French Canadian, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday by taking 22 shots. The shots were cleverly lined up to look like Quebec's flag with blue liquor and vodka. He began doing them and throughout the process threw up 3 times. Amazingly he finished but not after putting his life in ...

... the unlucky ones to the gulags). So it's a big day....lots of military parades ... old guys who look like their chest full of medals is going to topple them escorted by their grandchildren....thousands of kids in uniform......and everybody wearing brown and orange stripped ribbons (which commemorate the victory) and they all get drunk on Nevsky Prospekt (right outside our hotel window), sing all night, and cheer every one of the cannon shots and fireworks until 2 ...

... able to get tokens for us -- his Russian is clearly well-pronounced, as the ticket seller offered some extensive comments (which Keegan didn't understand). We knew we had to go seven stops, so we counted each stop, and Keegan compared the recorded voice which announced the stops with the signs on the map. Since there were no signs on the platforms, it was a bit hard to figure out exactly where we were ... yet managed to find our ...
