Rainbow Naples

Nous avons pris l'autobus publique pour atteindre le sommet du vesus, le volcan n'a pas tellement a offrir, mais la vue sur la bay est vraiment belle. Ensuite, nous avons visités les ruines d'Herculaneom. Une autre ville disparue sous l'eruption du vesus il y a pres de 2000 ans. il y a encore beaucoup de travail d'archeologie en cours, mais on peut voir que la ville est meiux conserver, il y a meme des batiments de 2 et 3 etages et des pieces de bois qui ont traversé le temps !

I am so far behind with this blog. Partly, it's because we have traveled every single month during 2009. There's so much to tell & show that unless I write every week, I'm always several trips behind. The other problem is ...

Ola Kala: simply, OK (in Greek). No time for lots of flap.....we're on the go. The Vatican Museums await us (and we can hardly wait to do more walking!). Enjoy the pictures and we'll fill you in on the adventure next time I make the time to sit and gab.

Sunday caught the train out to Pompei which was ginormous!

Naples is not a nice city, but it's a cool city. Venice, Florence, Verona are all nice, but once you've seen the sights, there isn't much else to them.

Walking around the Spaccanapoli district saw some really cool stalls and shops - some that looked like they had been there for ages and not changed much at all. Old school book stores with books piled high and seemingly without any order or system, a stretch on San Sebastiano that ...

... our guide gathered up the group and we headed into the excavated archeological site. Mom wasn't able to make it very far into the site before she decided to turn back and wait for us at a cafe near the entrance. She still hasn't fully recovered from her broken ankle and her stamina is terrible, so it was better for her just to take it easy.

Boo and I did the whole tour, but it was hot, hot, hot and Boo was, at times, none ...

... developmental cardiovascular research conference in Houston last May, when I hosted him at my place. Now, he is back in Italy, leading a lab in cardiovascular development research at the University of Naples. Back at the airport, I passed by some chauffeurs, who were holding up placards with various names on them. When I finally got through the crowd, I could not find Luigi! Several wrong turns and over an hour of walking later we arrived in Piazza Plebiscuito which all the travel books seemed to rate as a 'must see' but it really was just a big square with a few horse statues. Walked passed the Castel Novu on the way to the National Archeological Museum. This was pretty interesting with statues, amber and jewels, paintings, recovered items from pompei, tapestries a sundial ...

... how many switchbacks I've encountered... I've visited Capri where you have a winding very steep road from the pier up to the main piazza - the only problem being when you've been in the sun all day sipping the sweet but potent Limoncello and then try to head back down the same hill to catch the ferry... well let's just say it wasn't the best planning but I got lucky (read: no puking). Herculaneum was super fascinating and fantastic as welll, though I'd say there's equal parts yet to ...

... was stolen and she just waits for the buses to come in and goes up to people with backpacks and recruits them to stay at the hostel. It was alright, none too exciting, though. It was nice to talk to someone with a different perspective. Last night I was walking around Naples after dark, I couldn't find the bus and the taxis were on strike so I had a long walk ahead of me. The cop I got directions from said the hostel was in an especially bad area of town, and the people robbed ...
