Heading South Our time in Kaitaia and the Far North has come to an end. We both felt oddly sad to be leaving our place and the people we had met. There were times when we felt really isolated but now that it is time to go we realize just how fast the last 4 weeks have gone. We are now about 1/2 way through our time in NZ!! It helped that we met some really interesting and nice people, including Fred's preceptor who had us around a few times and included us in the offices annual x-mas dinner p...

... and Oz is huge. We can get to the next town in a couple of hours and there are townships and people living all over the place. We can also drive without worrying about petrol and water..woo hoo. After a couple of screaming parking disasters (we are not used to driving in traffic any more. I stalled the van 3 times and paul shouted at me) we made it to the Bay of ...
Paihia, North Island, New Zealand sainty1... lighthouse on our last day up North but turning back about half way there due to really bad weather. Amanda got carsick from the winding road on the way back, which was unusual for her. We went three hours out of way but made the right call since as it was we didn't pull into our next town until almost 7 p.m. and luckily found a motel room lickety-split. Phrase of the Week: We've had a couple guesses so far as to what the last word meant but won't reveal ...
Kerikeri, North Island, New Zealand cheesenutI had a very peaceful and deep sleep last night and even had the luxury of sleeping in this morning until 9:00. wow, was that nice. I got up feeling refreshed and eager to begin the next leg of my Northland expedition, which would involve me rejoining the MAGIC bus for the remainder of my trip, and taking it north about another hour and a half to the beautiful vacation area of the Bay of Islands. my base for the next three days would be Paihia, a ...
Paihia, North Island, New Zealand katelin... to get out of the way of Mary (Amy?) but as her car ragdolled me into the ditch like yesterdays ****** shorts I just had time to think...Boobies! Obviously. I spun off into the grass and gravel and slid to a halt a few meters from where Mary/Amy had made her attempt on my life. She walked up to me, kicked some sand into my eyes and spit on my back. I whimpered "Why?". She didn't answer. She just drove away. Without even a how-do-ya-do. An alternate and possibly more ...
Kerikeri, New Zealand gunslinger22... riveting, and after very happily stocking up on drop in a Dutch shop, we were on our way. We couldn't resist having lunch at what was apparently New Zealand's best Fish & Chip shop. It did not disappoint as, sat overlooking Mangonui harbour, we filled up for the rest of the day! A series of lovely windy little roads and stunning views led us to various beaches and villages to conclude a lovely days cruising!
Mangonui, New Zealand kimandrob... better than getting a job. It was so wonderful to hear familiar voices. Unfortunately, I cried the whole first call with dad, but we both got what we needed out of it. Mom had phoned a few days later saying she was jealous of dad and she needed to talk with me to...yay! Since we were told about the picking season, the holiday park told us about some mandarin picking. That was alright but I ...
Kerikeri, New Zealand nicki_gramlichHaving decided against enjoying a warm soak in the natural thermals of hot water beach in the approaching storm we headed back through the Coromandal region undecided on our next port. Jake had some mountainous challenges whilst driving through this forest region and his efforts weren't always appreciated by the ever growing line of cars that frequently found themselves travelling at our unintentional siteseeing pace ...
Russell, New Zealand judethWe get an early start and the weather looks promising as we get back in the car and try a little more of this driving on the wrong side of the road. Fortunately it is only a short drive to Paihia. We get a parking space on the first stretch of beach and set off to walk to the Ferry Terminal about 15 minutes away. There is a closer car park but with expensive day rates and this is lovely walk along the beach ...
