... Gneiss, a hard metamorphic rock giving rise to the great extent of exposed bedrock and the ruggedness of the terrain. On the map it wasn't always easy to distinguish the path from the cascade of rock/cliff symbols down towards the sea. This path was one of the highlights of the walk so far. By the golf course is a large depression - it looks a bit like an oversized bunker without the sand. No-one is quite sure of it's origins but at one time it was used for open air church services.

... April. In the area around Loch Ewe this week had been designated Russian Arctic Convoys week, to remember the events associated with the convoys which supplied food and other materials to Russia during World war II via what Winston Churchill once described as "the worst journey in the world." Loch Ewe was chosen as a base where convoys could assemble due to its deep water and narrow mouth allowing easier protection from enemy submarines.
