Out of the Mountains, Back to the High Plains

... similar to many others that we have seen. The national park rangers in period costumes and acting as interpreters gave a fantastic tour.

After the tour we had a quick lunch in the coach and continued on to Lamar, Colorado. We arrived here in time to check into the RV park, unhitch the car, hook up, slide out and level, and hop into the car for the 50 mile drive to Sand Creek ...

Goodbye Plains, Hello Mountains

... under his hardhat. Weather here was no longer summer. It looked as if the road had been reduced to a single lane and we were being held for oncoming traffic to pass. At first the flagman was all business but after we'd been stopped next to him for a few minutes, he warmed to Joe's friendly overtures. Yes, it had rained that morning. Couldn't really tell for the afternoon. Pause. The three of us randomly scanned the sky for clues.

Ready to leave

The last blog was written about events on Monday/Tues. One Tues I did some calculations and found that the stop I wanted to make in Tishomingo would actually add lots of hours to my trip home and to pick up Dale on Sat. would be pushing it. Dale had off Wed and Thurs nights so we talked and quickly decided that we would meet Wed morning in Albuquerque, NM. I picked up an airplane ticket for him and started preparing to leave.

In the meantime the company ...

Losers along the way

After making friends in other campgrounds on other storms, this site has been unusual in that I've made no friends. The campground has other campers who are working in the area and they get together around one of the barbeques for dinner but only one person has ever said hello to me.

So yesterday an older man was walking around when I opened up my door to let some cooler air in. He asked ...

Checking out Tribune

... of town a few years ago. What a find! Apparently there had been 10 inches of rain and a nearby fish pond had broken through into a ravine and in the process revealed this treasure. Because this specimen was almost fully intact, I was excited to be able to examine this display up close! After hearing the details of the find, my attention was directed to another exhibit on the wall - a sword blade and knife traced to the ...

Three Days 'til Departure

There are three days until Adrienne and I leave for Europe. We still have so much to do before we leave. First and most importantly we have to GRADUATE! Along with that we need to purchase last minute items without pulling out any strands of hair. We will arrive in Dublin, Ireland on the 25th of May.

Leaving Kansas

Today, we ate breakfast at the Senior Center in Windom. We got to share our experiences with the locals. It was cool to see the town getting together for Spring Clean up. A family with kids were at the park painting the playground equipment. Others were taking stuff over to the dump. Others took stuff to a burning pile. It was real interesting seeing people take part in their community. We headed to Dodge City to ...

Day 9: More Driving!!

... there with Winkie's sister for a few days and exploring the high desert country. The weather remains fair (though a little hot heading west into the afternoon sun at times), and we were surprised at the constant wind rushing across the plains. We could imagine ourselves exposed to the wind all day while traveling on foot or horseback. We are traveling in comfort at a congenial time of year, and admire Native Americans and settlers who lived and traveled in ...
