Traveling through the Rome airport we met up with 1996-99 Seahawk Brian, he's now in Atlanta. Yesterday we landed in sunny Palermo with the temperature 72 degrees. What a joy after the humidity and 95 degrees which covered me from head to toe with itchy "baby rash". The Cathedral of Monreale just outside Palermo is considered the pinnacle of achievement of Arab-Norman art. Founded in 1172 by William II, the interior is famous for its gold mosaics ...

... caught the 8pm ferry across to Naples because it worked out cheaper and quicker than driving back through Sicily and up the boot of Italy. We were supposed to arrive at 8am, only to be awoken from our cabin at 06h00 because we'd made good time during the night. It was then onto Barrea in the mountains!

... quickly locked the doors and we were all thinking uh oh where are we??? After squeezing through some extremely tight cobbled streets (Jabula's mirrors even had to be tucked in) we noticed that the streets got a bit cleaner and the characters dwindled in numbers and then the hotels started appearing - right we must have entered from the "******" side of town, it was actually quite nice now.

... We play cards and marvel in the glorious warmth. We head off to bed in a cozy warm bedroom as the fire continues to crackle and hum…the sound taking me back to my childhood and the wonderful fire that was always roaring in our family room. Majestic, filling me with warmth. I fall asleep as the fire dies down and finally extinguishes.

Late December freezing cold day, rain and heavy winds. The evening approaches and promises to be a cold one.

... On our last night in Palermo we decided to have tiramisu, we had been planning it for about 4 days. That’s what happens when you travel, things like what day to have dessert are big decisions. Well this big decision paid off, it was so delicious. All the food in Palermo has been exceptional, Luke’s favourite meal was fetticini with mussels and clams. Mine was a capricciosa pizza, I still don’t like olives ...
