We visited the Wawel Royal Castle in Krakow. We took in the cathedral and the royal tombs. Many of the most historic Polish figures are buried here. Then caught bus to Zakopane. Beautiful trip up the mountains looking at snow capped Carpathian Mountains in the distance. Ben lost Wom on the bus and we had a major crisis in tracking down the bus …

... before hitting the road again. We head back to the train station to head to Budapest.

As this is an area that is not frequented by tourists, I want to just mention how worthwhile I found our time in Eastern Slovakia. There is incredible hiking and sightseeing and great food. Each of these villages seems to have one of these old hotels where, as the guidebook stated "You dress for dinner." Some are in disrepair and their glory has faded. There's a lot of competition with newer hotels so I can see how it would be hard to ...

Sorry Mom, I crossed the border into Slovakia, but all is well! Arriving in Zakopane at about 1:00 this afternoon was high tourist time, but by 6:00 PM the Krakow and nearby Poles had left this city. The downtown area is somewhat like a Wisconsin Dells/Lake Geneva mix. I am sure it is somewhat different during the winter months and ski season. Still, it is very beautiful and just a walk in all directions ...
