South Pacific vacation

We arrived in the Tahiti capital of Papeete just before midnight. Other travelers have said that it is a dump and too get out of the city as fast as possible. We just needed a place to stay for the night and head out to Moorea as soon as we could. We had heard of a hostel called Chez Fifi's that was very close to the airport and was relatively cheep. It was very close walking distance and we headed over there with 5 other backpackers, a single German lady, and two british couples. When we arr...

We had an ocean view room that had a great view during the day and at night.

The sand is black, the water is warm, life is great. It was neat to sit by the pool, read a book and sip on a Mai Tai.

One can never get away from doing the washing.

... victims to the stage and it was hilarious to watch their efforts. One of the victims is a guy from Toronto whom we’ve met. Besides looking like Jay Leno, he’s just as funny.

While in town I was on the look out for “She-men” I had read some Travelpod blogs about this Tahitian cultural tradition. The youngest daughter in a family is responsible for the care of elderly parents ...

Another interesting fact given the discussion in the US about
health care: the French government provides free health care; Areti
also had 6 weeks off before the birth of her child and 10 weeks after
– PAID. Plus, if there were any complications with her or her
child she could apply and probably receive more time off – how
great is that?

... looking Polynesian girls here and some big big men. They drive on the right hand side of the road (as they do in Apia Wennie) and the traffic is horrendous. We walked around the town for a few hours but didn't do any shopping because of the prices. We are waiting until we get to Bora Bora tomorrow before we have a swim at the beach.
We have difficulty deciding which place to go to eat each day and almost have to miss one meal every day. I have only ...

... priced French wine, New Zealand wine is not stocked even though it's the nearest wine producing country. Some of the expensive bottles of French wine didn't sell too well, they had thick layers of dust on them (serves them right). I found some delicious Argentinean wine in cardboard litre packs at a fraction of the cost. We came across a group of musicians busking in the main street playing guitars & solid body ukuleles, which sounded a bit like banjos.

Tahiti - how nice can it be to be bored?

... Wasser.

French Polynesia: They Don't Have Tahiti Treat!!!

... for. Unfortunately, all the beaches were quite far from Papeete (our city) and the cost was prohibitive to get there. That night, we returned to the caravans for some good eats. We wrongly tried another van and found it to be just horrible - my chicken was only chicken fat and skin and there were dead flies in my beans. I pointed this out to the waitress and chef and they both refused to compensate me beyond just not paying for the beans. It was ...

Chapter 2: A proper update-the land of potholes

... the heck am I supposed to get home? And she told me to catch the bus. THe bus didn't leave for another hour so I bought some pineapple and sat eating it until I saw some tourists who looked lost. They were British and after finding out when the bus left, they decided to rent a car and offered me a ride home. So I got home to find my mum and sister had already rented scooters and driven off around the island. Though mine was outside the key was nowhere to be ...

Day 56: TAHITI!!!

... getting up morning after cloudy morning knowing that one day, hopefully soon, there won't be too many clouds and the sun will rise over the ocean horizon and light up the few clouds there are and it will be the kind of sunrise that makes you hear music, like Nicholas Cage in City of Angels. And sure enough, this morning it was just like that, with just enough clouds to turn bright yellow and pink and make the sky look like someone had painted it just for me. I had a ...
