The schools in Hoogeveen held their own version of "De Vierdaagse" ("The Four Days Event") - a four day walking tour held every year in Holland (in Nijmegen). We had planned to do the real thing, but could not register in time to participate.

We arrived in Amsterdam Schiphol airport in the early hours of the day. found our luggage and got our rental car. We then drove to Hoogeveen which took a generous 2 hours. ... this area has the highest level of unemployment & many young people leave to look for jobs elsewhere. This means that many local businesses have to close. The lack of supermarkets en route, as well as the fact it was Sunday where everything is closed-we had to resort to having broth soup made with a single stock cube and porridge for dinner!!
