Little to talk about today as all I have done is sort pics, write blogs and upload stuff to FB.

I did book the LOTR tour for tomorrow so that should be entertaining.

Today was Melbourne Cup and until now I had no idea what that was. I knew it was sports related so had been looking forward to possibly sitting in a pub watching some rugby but it turns ...

Jet-lag extraordinnaire

My plan yesterday was to stay awake as long as possible after landing in Wellington at 8 a.m. sharp. That is roughly 3 p.m. in Chicago...you can begin to see the difficulty of the challenge I had proposed for myself. Though I have most of an entire month to look forward to spending here in New Zealand, I want to kick this jet-lag to the curb as soon as possible. I want to wring every drop of enjoyment from this time to myself, so I feel it's entirely worth it to deny myself a little sleep ...

Northern Bound

... city and capital, at the height of rush hour so navigating the bus system with all of our luggage was quite the chore! We figured it out with some help along the way and got to the hostel, Rosemere, at the top of a big hill close to dinner time. There happened to be free soup so we had dinner and then headed out to check out the city a bit. We spent some time in a local bookshop and wandered around before heading back to the hostel.

Today, we plan to ...

Retrospective Entry - Windy Wellington

Firstly sorry for the incommunicado but I've been in a tropical island paradise with little to no outside connection. Anyway here is the New Zealand blog.

New Zealand

Another airport, another city. Gone are the pseudo surgical masks, still present is the expensive yet **** coffee; the weird and wonderful local interpretation of the guidelines and rules around sharp objects, gels, size of hand luggage, amount of hand luggage. There doesn't ...

Waimarama Waves - Surfing on Good Friday!

... ocean, while kite surfers raced by on the ocean. It was fun to dye the eggs right at sunset. Even though the eggs were brown to start, I made a lot of cool colors. When Dad got here, we showed him the cool playground where they have a giant zip line. We all tried it out, even Lu and Mom, and went super fast! New Zealand has some great playgrounds. Yesterday we met a guy ...

Karibu Creek

... far have been mostly odd jobs, like fixing the chicken house roof, constructing a piping system from the roof drain, and shoveling soil for the nextdoor neighbor. Karibu Creek is run by Maxine Rees. She does pretty much everything on this farm... director/jam-maker/chicken raiser... everything. The work of course doesn't take up the whole day so I've had time to do some side trips. Yesterday, Greg, a fellow woofer, and I went to this ridiculous beach. Today, we ...

Abel Tasman

... of the huge waves (2m) as it tries to back onto the beach to let us aboard. Hold on to your hats it's going to be a rough ride. As we swing out from the shelter of the bay and hit some really rolling sea, a message comes over the radio that 2 kayakers have been spotted way off the coast and need to be picked up (read the boat company wants their kayaks back safe and sound) So we circle around, spot the kayakers and while the boat heaves and rolls on the swell the captain hauls ...

South Island!

We arrived into South Island today and made our way to Kaikora. Supposedly a very pituresqe town, unfortunately we haven't seen much yet as its been raining quite a bit! We're supposed to be going whale watching tomorrow so hopefully the weather picks up. We have been a bit unfortunate with the weather as right before we arrived they were having lots of sun and ...

Nearly out of fuel

... and Christmas and New Year there. I had the gin because when I met the guys up at Cape Reinga they were drinking gin and juice which I had some of and had got a bit of a taste for it. Although I didn't get juice as it would have soon gone off in the van as I only have a chilly bin (cool box/esky) so I plumped for a good old GnT instead. So, my announcement of the Gin and tonic went down very well and we proceeded back down to the beach and ...
