By the sea again

... clean avenues looking at the various colourful buildings is a pleasure in itself. We visited a number of churches, palaces and small museums but as I always find it is the walk between ''sights'' that is most interesting and reveals the most about a country. Small markets, shops, notices and people on the street can each teach you more than all the old buildings in the world. I would like also to mention the food Kerala being ...

Kathakali, Martial Arts & The Loss Of A Toenail

... in particular the eyes), hands and legs so we could understand the story. We still didn't follow much of it though and it was a little long yet i couldn't look away from the stage, i was taken by it full power. Of course the bad guy was killed in the end and the good guy celebrated. A very intense show that left my brain manic. The martial arts demonstration was equally as impressive. The discipline of Kalarippayat with it's roots traced back to the 12th ...

... seen in the West as being somewhat barbaric. I could sort of understand that point when I watched Paul first try to eat with his hands. Eating with your hands is something you need to do from birth to really be able to do it properly. It's like an accent almost; the way they eat with their hands in the north is different to the south, and was also different in Gambia. I felt like I was speaking another language I didn't know so well when I was in the north, but in the ...

Day 23: The Sea, The Sea

... photo opportunity. The backwaters of Kerala are a massive area of canals, rivers and lakes that sustains a huge population. For the last twenty kilometres to Alleppey, we were able to observe canal life from the car. Cameron had great fun awarding himself points every time he saw, what he called a 'gondola' - a 30 foot long canoe that could carry many tonnes of cargo. Finally, we spotted the sea and pulled up outside our hotel. On hearing of our ...

Kochin - the heritage city

It was 8 am in the morning the guy gave a bell to our room with the breakfast in his hands, as we have to start for our city adventures at 9. A car was already booked for the day long tour and it was already waiting for us half an hour before. Joseph, the car driver, welcomed us with a smile and when we asked him about our tour plan, the first ...

Meantime, thought I'd continue with my top ten... Top Ten Things I Have Learned So Far (or at least since my last top ten): 10. Floating down a lazy canal with nothing but time and the gentle lapping of water against the boat...unbeatable! 9. Katie has not lost her obsession with reality shows and apparently ...

A few days in Cochin

... by the burner below! On the monday, we went in Johnson's rickshaw to Ernakulam station and I bought my ticket north for the following day. It was a rather subdued evening. Next day I felt dodgy - I cursed the tourist fodder I'd consumed the night before. It's a wonder why folk wax lyrical about their culinary experiences of India - from my limited view on things, 'tourist' restaurants mainly serve up **** - the 'curry' usually consisting of vegetables and/or meat ...

What is this Ayurvedic Cleanse Thing We Are Doing?

... purgative herbs) resulted in a full body experience much like having a parasite, only this was good for me? An intense day of evacuating bodily fluids from every imaginable place and then a slow rebuilding process over the following week using the treatments above with a strengthening focus. And through it all, the Doctor kept emphasizing that the biggest effect will come from our bodies own healing power once the balance is restored. Once our bodies are no longer just ...
