    Detroit cuts a fine figure, when viewed from across the river. Up close and personal it's scars are more obvious. The car manufacturing jobs have gone, many of the residents have gone, the city bankrupt. It still has endearing qualities, but the homeless are more overt, buildings empty and boarded up. We've seen worse, but Detroit is a shadow of it's former glory, a city struggling to get itself out of the rut that it currently finds itself in. I think it will get ...

    Changing trains in Chicago from the Southwest Chief to the Capitol Limited presented us with a three hour "layover". Not wanting to waste an opportunity, and keen to stretch our legs after hours on the train with more to come, we left our hand luggage in a locker at the station and hit the streets to catch a quick glimpse of this iconic city. And once again, we were not disappointed.

    ... The wind off the lake was bitterly cold so we turned back as soon as we got there. We stopped at AL's favourite Trader Joe's grocery store on the way back for some supplies including milk for me, as both the girls think its gross!

    Sam got in about 10.30 and we chatted about her day for an hour or so before going to bed. It took a long while for the fact that I was in America to sink in, I think perhaps because I never really thought I'd ever come to the States.

    Last night while I was checking in for our flights today, Karl decided we should upgrade to Business First. It is 8.5 hours from Chicago to Amsterdam and it will be MUCH more pleasant in business class.
