... area for 3 years (phew), and made our way over to the Merced Trail. The trail was about an hour round trip, including time for photos. At the bottom of the trail (or as far down as we were going to go), were some amazingly tall, wide old trees lined up in a row. It took 7 of us to be able to put our arms around one of the trees completely!
When we got back to camp it was time for dinner (yay, I wasn't on cook duty), but then Kate got all of us ...

... out of Death Valley at 9:40 before the heat really started up. It was an interesting windy and steep drive out of the valley and we had a fairly long drive in front of us.

Our GPS was pretty useless for this drive because it was insisting on taking us the long way around because the highway we wanted to use is usually closed in winter and I guess the GPS figured it was better not to use it full ...

... a canopy, contrasting with the white and grey granite monoliths that rose up sharply from the roads. We had to stop the car on more than one occasion simply to get out and marvel at our surroundings. Looking through the car windscreen and windows, it was difficult to get a real sense of the scale of the breathtaking scenery before us, and so by getting out of the car, we were exposed to the full jaw-dropping 360 degree panorama and were dwarfed by the mountains around us. ...

We arrived at Yosemite National Park yesterday afternoon. I went for a walk with the Schroeders; Frajo, Inge, Anna, Eva, Max and Franz (a family from Germany on the tour). We walked through meadows to the river, where some went for a swim or a paddle, then through a boulder trail. Yosemite really is beautiful with its huge huge silvery-grey rock faces, magnificent waterfalls, pretty rivers and lakes and various types ...

On our last day we woke up fairly promptly, and I had finally gotten over the worst of my cold and was feeling much more active. In fact I got up fast enough to take a lovely picture of wild man Ben Grylls half asleep in the tent. After starting a fire we decided to leave it to become hot coals whilst we drove back to the hot springs and took a quick, first thing in the morning dip.
