    DAY 8: PORTLAND - SEATTLE 272 MILES

Leaving Portland, we cross the Columbia River and arrive in Vancouver – Vancouver, Washington that is! Rather than making a quick dash on to Seattle not much more than a couple of hours away, we decide to take advantage of the great weather and time we have available to make a detour to visit Mount St Helens.

Summer has come to Gig Harbor and the temperature has shot up into the high 80s. The town bends round a small inlet on the West side of Puget Sound and is a small fishing port with yacht berths and marinas spread round the bay. I will add a few pictures from last night. The park was operated by the Quileute Indians. Everyone seems to be a native. Almost every car and RV had Washington plates. The berries in the park are green so the season continues. We saw maybe 5 people in 11 days picking. We noticed on this trip that we have about the smallest rig in the campground every night. Today was truly a Drive by. We are out of time so we stop infrequently. It would take days to all of Olympic National Park. ...
