Gunung Batur

The Ubud Story

We travelled to Ubud by taxi as we couldn’t find anyone who could tell us where to stop a bemo or catch a public bus. We paid 200,000 rp (about £13) for a 11/2 hour journey, which sounds quite reasonable, however we now realise is quite expensive. Had we listened to Kate and got a metred bluebird taxi, it would have probably come to about half the price. Nevermind, we’ll know for next time… (I’m writing this in retrospect, so can tell you that the phrase “...

Ubud: Have car, will travel

... signs (or so we thought). Of course, the driving here is insane, and the roads are worse! It’s like driving through a maze – you’re heading north and the road suddenly does a 45-degree turn in another direction. After a few of these you feel like you have gone around the block twice. What looks like a major intersection on the map is basically a junction where two very narrow, unmarked roads cross over, often without street signs. We got ...

Banana Starved Monkeys & Hindu Temples

... eight or ten bananas from Whitney's hands and started chomping away. We were too scared of him to take it back, and instead focused our attention on the non-aggressive monkeys sitting on trees and ledges. We were entertained for a while just watching them interact with one another.

After we grew bored of watching monkeys play, we found a taxi driver to drive us to two nearby temples. The first was a small hike down a mountain and was carved into the cliffs. As Bali is a ...

CHAK-CHAK-CHAK Full of Karma

... Out in the Western world, one can become numb to life as work, stress, and pointless societal worries begin to weigh down on a person. Here, one cannot avoid the inspiration that emanates from the people and places. It simply catches up to you and you can't do anything but learn from it.

Inspiration here comes in many forms. It can come in the form of simple admiration of the physical landscape. Rice paddies etched out in the land create amazing patterns and designs ...

Day One:

Even though we stayed up until 5am clubbing we still managed to get up for 11:30am. What is even more impressive is that I managed to get up, shower, and pack my bag before the 12pm check-out time; I actually had time to spare and finished before Chris! [Tom: That's no real feat - Chris has to do his hair!]

Whilst checking-out we were approached by a driver who inquired as to our next location. After telling ...

I convened with Miryam and Suzanne and we all three headed to our last class to teach: the second grade. After teaching by myself for the past hour and a half, I was actually already exhausted from it! I never believed that it could take so much energy, and now I appreciate all those years of work all my teachers put in so that I would get an education. The ...

We said, "Hello" to about a thousand kids along the way who came running out as we passed through their villages. It was a real delight. As we got closer to Ubud we passed numerous ...

... doesnt rustle up much feeling. But coming out here and seeing a memorial to people who had died just six years previously, in exactly the spot you are, people who had just come out to have a good time, you can't help but identify with each and every name on that list and it strikes a different chord altogether. I couldn't stay there for very long. Kuta Beach is the heady tourist centre of Bali, its located on the south of the island and the area around it is the ...

But after that we emerged into an amazing rice paddy view. My favorite part was the ducks. Raising flocks of farm ducks is something of an Ubud specialty, and often you will see groups of ducks feeding among the rice paddies. It seems to be a ...
