... by the Vikings in the 9th century. It was taken over by the Anglo-Norman invaders of the 12th century. Our local guide let us know, among many interesting historical facts, that Waterford is NOT named for the crystal factory!! It's Norse name was Vedrafjord, meaning 'windy fjord.'

When we got to Glendalough, we parked by Upper Lake. Unfortunately, the parking lot closes at 6pm and they make a big deal out of not being able to get your car out later than that, so as it was nearly 4pm we had to take the shorter 5km walk, called the Spinc. ... infatuation with potatoes. The cottage pie meals were topped with mashed potatoes and served with a side of chips, and the Guiness casserole meals had potatoes in the stew, and then were topped with mash.
