Perfect location!
We are frequent inn & bed & breakfast guests. We loved the Newbury for its' fantastic location to fashionable Newbury Street shops/restaurants. It is within walking distance to the nearby Public Garden, as well as Charles Street/Beacon Hill.
The Newbury is not posh, but it is very clean and quiet. We had a room on the rear of the inn, so cannot comment on the noise level of the street-facing rooms. The morning breakfasts are yummy, with eggs, bacon & full continental as well.
A couple of areas of improvement for this inn: staff your property with knowledgeable and helpful employees. We felt this was very lacking here. The staff did not seem to know much about local tour operators and couldn't recommend preferred (non-touristy) restaurants, etc. Also, the rooms could do with some sprucing-up and additional amenities. Our room was in dire need of a paint job and updated decor.
Other than these minor things, we'd highly recommend the Newbury for it's location, great (included) breakfasts and quiet surroundings. And the price you pay--well below other nearby properties!
Charming
Such history...love the wooden, creaky floors. Nicely decorated in old fashion charm. Free breakfast enjoyable every morning. Make sure you go across the street at the tappas restaurant and Soncie's is a must for dessert.
Rather stay here then any of the chains in the Newbury area. Maybe not all the posh, but cozy.
Wonderful value!
What a great find! Boston is a very pricey city for hotels, so this was a wonderful value. The room was very clean, spacious and quiet (we asked for a back room which has not much of a view, but is very quiet). The staff were friendly and the breakfast was very generous. You couldn't ask for a better location from which to explore the city. I'll definitely stay here again and would recommend it to anyone.
Back-Bay Gem
Wonderful boutique B&B style (full-breakfast included) hotel on the fashionable Newbury Street. We took one of the largest rooms and had a nice bay window with sofa overlooking Newbury street. This street is charming with boutiques and restaurants but close enough to the bus to Harvard and walking distance to the Common. We chose this over the Beacon Hill area and were glad we did - that area is charming but too remote (unless you want close proximity to the financial district; Beacon Hill also has only a fraction of the shops/restaurants as Back Bay). We stayed here during a mother-daughter trip in June 2004. We will definitely return! (Don't eat at Legal Seafood - we heard how great this was but should have listened to the natives who disagreed...)
Newbury is great!
Nearly all we have to say about the Newbury has been said word for word by the reviewer from Exeter, Devon who visited in June 2004.
This B&B was a great choice for us - we found the staff very helpful, the room was clean and very comfortable and the breakfast was excellent. They also provided self-serve tea and coffee 24 hours a day in the breakfast room.
I would recommend this place very highly to anyone who was thinking of travelling to Boston.
A gem of a hotel
This was my first trip to Boston so I wanted a hotel that was conveniently located for someone anxious to explore on foot, and comfortable to stay in while I wasn't out exploring. The Newbury was all this and more. Newbury is a great street to stay on. Located in the charming Back Bay area, lined with colourful boutiques, restaurants and one-off shops, giving ready access to all that is good about Boston - great places to eat, good shopping, historical places. The hotel is basic, but my room was spacious and clean, the self-serve breakfast provided all I wanted to set me up for the day ahead. There were no extras or frills, but that is reflected in the price. Would I stay there again? You bet!
Never again
Unfortunately the only good thing I can say about the Newbury Guest House is that the location is convenient. Otherwise the rooms are in need of repairs from paint chipping off the wall to thermostats that do not regulate properly to showers that either run ice cold or scalding hot. We were in Boston for a convention at the Hynes which is only a couple of blocks from the Newbury House. This is the good part.
Concerning the down side, we notified the front desk of the problems we were having with the shower. The only response I got was that they had a repairman in the last couple of days. Unfortunately that did not seem to work. They did offer to move us to another room however we were not the only ones having problems with the shower. They did not offer to help us move, they did not offer to discount our bill, they did nothing. Friends of ours staying in another room could not regulate their heat. When they mentioned this to the front desk the only thing they received was an attitude problem from the staff. After complaining to the owner their heat was repaired but then broke again the next day and was never fixed again. While we will be returning to Boston, we will NEVER AGAIN return to the Newbury Guest House.
Wonderful little inn
Newbury Guest House is a cozy little B&B on one of Boston's best streets for shopping, strolling, or people-watching. It's located in the lovely Back Bay neighborhood, in walking distance from the Public Garden and Boston Commons. Rooms are small but nice, and continental breakfast is included and served in a very nice room on the ground floor of the hotel. Parking is available in a lot behind the hotel.
This is the place my wife and I stay every time we're in Boston, and I highly recommend it. Newbury Guest House is a lovely inn and a bargain to boot.
Grae alternative to a corporate hotel
Nice place, handsome brick victorian row house. I've stayed there twice with my family. Many of the guests seem to be returns, even the business guests, which makes sense because it offers a good value and includes breakfast. Its comfortable without being chic or corporate. The staff is friendly and knowlegeable. It has a good location on Newbury Street which is lined with great shops and restaurants plus the Prudential Center is close by. Its atmosphere is nice and low key almost like someones house. The elevator is small and the central stairway has settled a tad but that only makes it feel a bit English. They even give you a key to the front door. Makes you feel right at home.
Great Location
Spent a week at Newbury Guest House. Wonderful location, walking distance to everywhere. Very accomodating and friendly staff.Had problem with room--heat would not go off or lessen. We swithced rooms without a problem after one night, but as it is a small hotel, no staff were available to do the move for us.Excellent value for location and nice rooms, not sterile hotel/motel standard.

Bostoniens, bostoniennes, me voilà !!
