... of rail in 1869 and cars in 1918 on highway 30 to now this mega highway I - 80.
Fort Kearny (notice the spelling has changed) Historical Park and State Park is about 4 miles south of town on the south of the Platt River.
The Fort was the only defence for the wagon trains going west in the early days so again all the different Trails converged here which enabled repairs and supplies.
Left Denver in the morning and headed to Cheyenne WY and saw the state capitol. Quite a bit fancier than the NV capitol. From there headed to Nebraska using state highways. Went to Scottsbluff and Chimney rock. These were markers for western settlers following the Oregon, Mormon, California trails as well as the Pony Express. At Scottsbluff the wagon ...
Kearney, Nebraska, United States cmbuchholz... with period dress and pioneer demonstrations. (At least that's what Tish told Tom.) So we made the trek south of I-80, our concerns growing as we passed a series of cheesy signs for "Harold Warp's Pioneer Village." (Harold Warp made big money as the inventor of Flex-o-glass, for those of you trivia buffs in the crowd.)
Well...our fears were realized ...

We traveled north through Oklahoma and Kansas (via I 35;I 135; US 81) for 12 hours. Finally, after traveling for 12 hours, we found a place to stop!!! It was nice having our RV to just park. It was 48 degrees, Tuesday Morning, in Grand Island, NE!!!
Grand Island, Nebraska, United States kbwebster1Today, Friday, was another driving day. OK Nebraska rivals Nevada for the worst state ever to drive through! We already described Nevada. Nebraska is desolate and flat the sand of Nevada is traded for wheat fields. Fortunately today was a short (320 mile) day. We arrived in Grand Island at around 5:00 and immediately headed for the pool. It was hot outside. We swam, ate dinner and swam some more. The night was ...
Grand Island, Nebraska, United States bearsrule009... dont worry" Lee said, "We'll walk"... the look on her face was a picture. She looked like Lee was the most stupid person in the world, or that he was raving mad... "it's like a 110 degrees outside" she said in an American drawl, "why would you want to walk?"... Well, exactly! The casion's were quite interesting, we had a look at two of them - both on boats because of the licensing laws in the US and both of us managed to come away with more than we left with - bonus! :)
Council Bluffs, Iowa, United States lisartwWe had a good night's sleep, and the next day we woke up feeling very refreshed. I found out my cell reception was next to nothing...even standing in the middle of the yard. This was not necessarily bad. Really it was just one less thing to worry about. We had breakfast together and spent a lot of time visiting. It was really nice to ...
Outside of Fullerton, Nebraska, United States travelbuddy420We made the drive from Metropolis to Fullerton NE. in one day. It was a long drive. More endless road and quick coffee/ restroom stops. We passed though St. Louis, and stopped at a McDonalds in the middle of nowhere for lunch. Around 6:00 there was a massive rain/ hail storm ...
Fullerton, Nebraska, United States travelbuddy420Today was too much fun, although I am sincerely glad the weekend is over. I am looking forward to relaxing, and getting some work done.
Ian, Tiff and I went over to Derek's house for a pool party. So we got some sun all after noon. Grilled up some salmon and hot dogs and just laid about the pool having a good time. Ian wore a speedo just to be funny and so we took some pics of that. It was a good time, and after that we hung out in front of the StaRV talking for a ...
