Rainy days in Durban

I'm spending 2 more nights in Durban with a nice couple I found on couchsurfing.org. Margaret is an environmental consultant working on transportation issues for the city of Durban, and Gavin is a professional clown. They've given me a private guest room and various rides around town, which is great because public ...

Walking around the City

... to some sort of chain but once I sat down and looked at the menu it was very much like Calcio on Cryws Road in Cardiff (Marc will know what I mean). So I ended up having an English breakfast, paid the bill but decided to go the loo before going. On the way to the toilets were a few freezers which is quite unusual and also a big cockroach on the floor - I think it was dead but at least they could have cleared it up to pretend the place was clean!!

Hippie happy in Durban

... enjoying fires on the beach, partying with Kim and my new friends, partying all night long and not sleeping one Friday night to go fishing in Shongweni dam, diving in the awesome Aliwal Shoal with sharks, turtles, dolphins and rays at almost all dive, spending a few days at Bo's and Tina's in a cosy rusty little house on the beach with the most amazing view... no wonder I spent... 3 weeks in Durban!!

Also lived a ...

Umshado wesiZulu (A Zulu wedding)

... bad. There were lots of speeches (in Zulu) and group singing, and then the food was served. We ate a very typical South African meal- rice, beef or chicken curry, cole slaw, beets, and smashed butternut squash. It was definitely not the best meal I've ever had, but who was I to criticize? I wasn't even invited to the wedding! After eating, most of the tent was cleared out for the presentation of the gifts from the bride's family to ...

Never have I been so excited by a grocery store

South Africa is really... white. Durban is dangerous at night and there
is a huge mall. They have blackouts every day for two hours at two in
the afternoon, and even the malls shut down.

On to Durban

... and phone number. We called, they answered and rest is history. Again terrific hosts, who took care of us, and fussed over us as they realized we were somewhat in shock from the accident. Fortune was with us. We had a 2 story self catered unit overlooking the pool and garden, full kitchen, 3 bedrooms for a great price. Immediately, we knew that this was for us until our return to Jo'burg to catch the plane.

A Place of My Own

... me and came over to greet me at the table with a kiss on the check. Louise was surprised so I had to explain how I knew him. I was going to take a taxi home after dinner, but the South African woman who grew up in Durban and came to pick up Louise didn't feel as though it was safe for me to take a taxi home alone at night so she took me home instead. I mentioned my transportation frustration to her, and she said that she would go "crazy" in this ...

Riding the Waves in Sodwana Bay

... and I saw some nice fish. I stayed fairly close to the scuba divers who I could see below me. But then I suddenly had a wave of nausea come over me. Yes, I ended up feeding the fish. I hope they like the oranges I had for breakfast that morning. It was weird because I felt fine the first 10 mins I was in the water and the nausea came over me quite suddenly. And as soon as I vomited, I felt fine again so I kept swimming along. About 15 ...

Bob and the Mighty Zulus

... in) really made you feel like you were back in the days of Shaka Zulu and his mighty worriers. After following this Lion for about half a mile he slowly walked off into the bush and vanished as though he was never there. Spurred on by seeing the most amazing creature that graced these lands, we slowly drove on heading in what ever direction the tracks took us, and just think this was only day 1. Durban. It's time to talk about TB

... hotel region that borders the beach, the city is spread around on various hills, and it was nice to feel the change in elevation. We finally reached the University of KwaZulu-Natal, climbing higher and higher. It was a spectacular view from the top. Durban is a big place! The University was modern and large, and gave us the opportunity to meet in a constructive environment. Then we headed to CAPRISA, a research institute that does a lot ...
