Fire. After my first unsuccessful attempt to get the gas heater working I finally cracked it on Monday. I think it was just the igniter that wasn't working as when I cleaned up the contacts it lit straight away. The fan heater is good but a bit noisy. We had one in the motor home last time, but this van would easily be twice the size in area and the little oil ...
Back to the van
OK, on Thursday we took a train ride from Whitby to Middlesbrough on the Esk Valley Railway. This is a main line service but is specially funded as a way of getting people to get to Whitby or Middlesbrough via the Moors. Great for me as driving through the moors is not the best way to see them so sitting on a train gave me a chance to see the scenery.

Ready for Departure
As dusk descends, the promised monsoon rains have not quite materialised but it is cold and very windy. It's good to know we will in hot and sunny climes quite soon.
Luggage is nearly packed. Judith has been scouring the shops for suitable light clothing and we have vast quantities of medical items including insect repellents and malaria tablets.
No room for the cricket bat I'm afraid.

... verge of closing up for good when by sheer chance Wallace, of Wallace and Grommet fame, said the immortal words 'not even a bit of Wensleydale" when the love of his life in the Close Shave episode said she didn't like cheese. W and G fans all over the UK then decided to try Wenslydale and the brand was saved. Good old Wallace, what a star. I was expecting a monument erected in his honour outside the creamery, but alas ...
Catching up
... around the Dales to a few villages we have picked out on the map. For those who remember it, this is All Creatures Great and Small country that we are visiting today.
Everything is still going well. Car is behaving itself, the van is a bit cramped buy we get by. We don't rush anywhere and don't leap out of bed. After all, we are here for a few months so we can take our time.
