... has been absolutely spectacular. Last time I was here I remember having to stop at LLBean to buy a t-shirt, because even though it was early November it was sunny and in the 70s and I was not prepared. This visit was almost as nice, just a little bit cooler, but sunny and gorgeous. I think Portland likes me and wants to show off.
Monday we left the coast and headed inland through western Maine, up into New Hampshire ...

This morning started out at a 'brisk' 42 degrees. We've had such a mild fall in NYC this year, it was a little shocking. But I packed for every eventuality, so a little rummaging in the car and I was all set for the day. We drove through the Berkshires to Northampton, MA where I met up with my friend Cate and her daughter Ellie for a delicious lunch ...

After the great exercise, Brian decided to make homemade pasta. Tony and Michelle had a pasta maker and Brian showed them his technique for making pasta from scratch in a very short amount of time. We made two types of sauce: a tomato based sauce and a pesto. Both were delicious.

Debbie and I have talked on the phone from time to time, over the 36 years since we got out of the Air Force in 1978 but... I never thought I'd find myself just 70 miles from her home in Massachusetts!!! She was SO SURPRISED when I called her and asked if we could stop by for a visit!! ... our lunch, better than sitting in the car. Their restrooms were the first we have come across that have dual flush systems and there were even fresh flowers in the ladies restroom.
Continued on westward going between route 2 and 2A which sometimes were the same road. We made an unscheduled stop at a small town called Quabbin as Wes was quite tired. They put a lot of thought into naming their streets (see photo).
