... calf which was sad. But on the upside, another calf that Andrew brought down has started to bond with it's mother so we may not need to adopt it and 8 chicks have hatched. Two of the chicks are not in very good condition so we are keeping them warm and feeding them. There's a really weak one which, dont know if he's gonna make it but im trying my best to keep the poor little thing alive so fingers crossed!
Kimbolton, New Zealand lornastravels... stop the road heads into a tunnel which was where the road was blocked the previous week, here there was about three meters of snow on each side of the road from the last avalanche which had been cleared. The tunnel is reasonably long and has a serious gradient of about 1 in 10 downhill – quite odd. When the road appears on the other side, the mountains reach their peak (so to speak) with about a vertical mile of bare cliffs soaring up on each side of the ...
Te Anau, South Island, New Zealand hadwin... a good place for a snack. We didn't stay long here as we had been told of some limestone caves at Clifton that very few people visit know about, when we got to the location the caves don't look like much just a standard door size opening in a hill side surrounded by grazing sheep. The cave we enter ran for abot 800 metres and emerged about 600 metres from where we entered, it was stand up walking to the end with a verticle chimney at the end, if you plan to do this take a ...
Te Anau, South Island, New Zealand iquaff... tear up your car if they get in. So we took a
scenic drive through the park, catching views of waterfalls and the
fiords, to the other side where we could catch the boat in Doubtful
Sound.

11:30
AM - We boarded the boat and began a round trip cruise out to the
Tasman Sea. The fiords were amazing, and there were lots of bowl shaped
valleys which are carved by glaciers, as ...
Pongaroa, New Zealand helium803... his hand at baking a dampa bread (or something like that, another of those Aussie delicacies!) but it turned out to be a bit burned. Not exactly croissant. The next day we drove behind I&B's 1981 minivan Boogah (that's a funnier name than Margie? And Boogah also looks a lot funnier than Marge!) to Castle Point to meet up with the rest of the apple thinners. They arrived in a convoy, one of the cars topped with a Christmas ...
Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu, New Zealand johannajulien... alond the beach and then retired to our prison cells where we spent the night! Let me explain....Napier prison has been converted into a backpacker's hostel, it is pretty creepy - people were hung here apparently - there is even a graveyard out the back. The long corridors with little lighting and single cells the size of a wardrobe are the sleeping quaters, but Gem and I were too freaked out by them to stay there and opted for 'the ...
Napier, New Zealand caz_sykesThe ferry ride was uneventful. It was good weather though and the views were pretty nice. We arrived in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, 3h 20min after leaving Picton. Wellington is a really nice place. Apparently, we were lucky because the weather is usually **** and windy. We had sun and blue skies. We went to Te Papa Museum which is the museum of New Zealand showcasing NZ's history and culture. We also went up, up, up to ...
Pongaroa, New Zealand bryannie... moved to some idyllic lakefront!) Kaniere would be a magnificent sailing location, sandflies nothwithstanding, but no-one seems to do that here.

And so to the glaciers, where the scenery gets rearranged on a regular basis so we get surprises each time. Chief among this was the new access route to the Franz Josef glacier, which is now up a ladder which the guiding company close off, ostensibly for health and safety reasons although our ...
Te Anau, South Island, New Zealand heleng2... we would need snow chains at all for the trip because apparantly it can be really dangerous to go without them as the whole place is in a massive avalanche zone... jeepers.

Luckily we didn't - a good thing too as none of us knew how to fit them - not that we had any anyway!

So the drive up there was pretty scenic - the only thing was we kept getting stuck behind these massive tour buses - annoying!!!

We did still manage ...
