Seeing the Historical and the mythical

After a wonderful introduction to Greece with our stay in Athens, I rented a car and we headed south into the Peloponese. It was election time and the roads were crazy with holidaying athenians headed to the beach. Florence was the unfortunate copilot forced to read the signs to Κορινθ 59;ς (Corinth) and beyond. First we came upon the Corinth canal, a 800m long 100m deep cut acros the isthmus which gave all of us a feel for how narrow this spit of land ...

Visit to the Peloponnese

... painful!). I therefore decided to take a bus to Epidaurus instead, which was well worth it. Its main attraction is a stunning ancient greek theatre, with accoustics so excellent that you can a coin dropped in the circular centre from the highest of the 54 tiers of seats. After my visit to Epidaurus, I took another bus back to Athens, where I had booked another four nights accomodation, until my flight to Milan on October 29. (Nov. 11 - Update: new photos!)

Greek Islands

... with its own castle). I also took a day trip to Nysoros and island that is home to a dormant valcano. Pretty cool. I really enjoyed Kos and would love to go back and make it a jumping off point for another island tour in the very distant future. Three days gone by, I took a short ferry to Bodrum Turkey where I met some very friendly employees of the local bus company before traveling by night bus to Istanbul to complete my Greek adventure.

Marathon

7/2 It was tough finding the right bus station and the right bus to Marathon but after that it was a really nice roadtrip. Jeff had suggested I visit and I thought it would be something different to do on a visit to Athens. Many new upscale houses are being built on the hills between Athens and Marathon. Between the two cities it was very windy and hilly so I can see why the marathon was so tough when it was held in Athens in ...

The start of our 4 day land tour

We started our 4 day land tour today. We were the first to be picked up by the bus at Hotel La Mirage. Subsequently, we had other Australians, Dutch, Americans, South Africans etc who came onboard. Our first stop was at the Corinth Canal. Ancient Corinth used to be an affluent and powerful city. It survived the Peloponnese wars and Macedonian rule but was razed by the Romans in ...

Marathon

... There is not much to see at Marathon but the implications of the battle resound to modern times as it allowed ancient Greek society to prosper and bloom in which democracy, philosophy, artistic techniques, as well as other advances in thought were experiented with and enacted.

Limnos --> Evia

We took many photos of the boat at that stage, since there's not much to see or do in Kimi in mid-september, let's be honnest. A few are displayed here, among others you will appreciate the original 1964 life raft, one we're happy we didn't have to use ;-) (we were close twice though). Also, I remember we had a party that night and I still excpect your pictures, Tony ! No censorship accepted !
