    ... but after 2 miles spotted them another mile or more away on a bald knob. We decided not to pursue them, but enjoyed the views along the way. This is a lovely highland area that reminded us much of our home in West Virginia, and Dolly Sods Wilderness area, which is in our own backyard. Still, one never tires of such beauty, wherever it may be found!
    After our hike we drove back to Marion, Virginia, and had a late lunch at a barbeque place there.

    We met up with AJ (our nephew) and Allison, who are hiking the Appalachian Trail. We had breakfast together at the Apple Tree Restaurant in Marion, and they told us all about their adventure on the trail. They are 1/4 of the way through and Virginia has the longest stretch of trail. They took a week off for AJ to collect his PHD diploma, then headed back on the trail.     ... There were so many that Friday and Saturday were pretty much just me going to a raffle and then heading to the next one ad nauseum. I went to raffles for many different companies and, while I didn't win in most of them, I did come away from Trail Days with a new set of Kelty trekking poles, which, funnily enough, was the one thing I actually wanted to win to use on the trail, as the tent I ordered uses trekking poles to set it up and mine were getting sort of curved ...

    ... do. The trail followed the river a ways further then went back up another steep slope. It ruined my good mood from the earlier part of the trail. Shortly after, just in time to complete the mood-ruination, came a random mountain out of nowhere. The rest of the day's hike looked pretty easy: a few decent climbs, but nothing crazy.
