... anapanapa Bay which was like lying on tarmac. What a word! Wai'anapanapa. That's the great thing about the Polynesian language, they love their syllables. I think the longest place name I saw was 7 syllables long at Honoapi'ilani Highway... it must make a huge dent in the Federal road-sign budget.
Economically it is odd here. Having purchased a 'Maui Gold' pineapple in Vancouver for $1 CAD (which is literally 50p) I was flabbergasted that a road side 'farmer's market' ...

There were also a couple of randy males following the mother and calf (Hawaii is the birthing and breeding grounds for humpbacks), so we had 3 or 4 whales at a time right up by the boat. And even while we were watching these guys, several more appeared at various times all around us - I just couldn't get my head around how many were out there.
For the past few days we have been in the second largest of the Hawaiian islands, Maui. The beaches here are beautiful and varied, with soft white sand, golden yellow sand, black shiny sand and even green and red sand! The sea is so clear and, again, varied - in places it is quiet and gentle, others wild and dangerous.
